Medical debts erased for 17,000 former Deaconess, Valley patients

The debt relief comes from a settlement between the Empire Health Foundation and Community Health Systems, which owned the Spokane-area hospitals from 2008 to 2017. On average, those benefiting from the settlement will have roughly $2,800 in debt wiped from their credit reports.

Anti-abortion activists meet opposition at EWU, Planned Parenthood

Two anti-abortion activists demonstrated at Eastern Washington University on Wednesday afternoon, about two weeks after a similar appearance prompted a counterprotest involving hundreds of students. In the evening, the same two men joined hundreds of other anti-abortion activists for the latest meeting of “The Church at Planned Parenthood,” a crowd that included state Rep. Matt Shea. Police and a small group of counterprotesters were also present.

EWU moves forward with budget cuts while some decry focus on athletics

EWU is continuing to pursue campuswide budget cuts while raising money for a new football stadium and routing funds into student-athlete scholarships, frustrating some faculty members. President Mary Cullinan, meanwhile, says the university is collecting donations for all kinds of projects and programs.

Spokane County prosecutor fired after quarreling with judge

Kyle Treece, who worked in the prosecutor’s office for 13 years, was fired on Oct. 18. Earlier this month, Superior Court Judge Tony Hazel found Treece in contempt and fined him $500 for “disrespect, rude interruption, insolence towards the tribunal and a refusal to follow (the) court’s lawful instructions.”
