Area colleges pledge to support international students following ICE rule change

A new Trump administration policy that threatens to revoke international students' visas won't have the same impact at every college and university, as institutions have taken various approaches to reopening during the coronavirus pandemic. But for any international student who had hoped to take online-only courses this fall, the choice is clear: Risk attending at least some in-person classes, or leave the country.

Spokane Symphony administrator resigns when confronted about racist, conspiratorial tweets

In since-deleted tweets uncovered by KHQ, Bethany Schoeff-Cotter referred to the Black Lives Matter movement as "a disease on this country" and suggested the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis is a hoax designed to influence this year's elections. Schoeff-Cotter also called those who wear masks to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus "idiots" and accused Microsoft founder Bill Gates of a plot to force vaccines and microchips on the American public.

Protesters call on Spokane City Council to reject controversial police contract

"Let us be clear: Any contract that has that language related to the ombudsman or the ombudsman commission is absolutely unacceptable," Kurtis Robinson, president of the Spokane chapter of the NAACP, told the crowd outside City Hall. "The matter of police accountability is a conversation between the city and the people – not the city and the guild."

Second Coyote Ridge prisoner dies of COVID-19 amid outbreak

William A. Bryant, 72, was serving a 68-month sentence for first-degree child molestation out of Grays Harbor County, according to the state Department of Corrections. After contracting the novel coronavirus, Bryant was transferred on June 13 to a hospital in the Tri-Cities, where he died on Monday, the DOC said. He would have been released from prison, at the earliest, in April 2020.

EWU President Mary Cullinan faces no-confidence vote by faculty senate

Before taking the helm of Eastern Washington University in 2014, Cullinan resigned as president of Southern Oregon University after an overwhelmingly poor performance evaluation and a no-confidence vote by the SOU faculty. Professors accused her and other administrators of financial mismanagement. One professor at the time said Cullinan's leadership had facilitated "a climate of fear at SOU." A similar situation is unfolding at EWU.
