Spokane police arrested a 19-year-old man this morning for allegedly shooting his friend in the head by accident then trying to chop the body up with a hatchet.

Man found dead post-fire

Authorities found a dead 50-year-old man in the closet of a fire-damaged Spokane apartment building Thursday night. The victim, identified as John K. Reintjes, was found dead about 10 p.m. in his first-floor apartment unit at 1203 W. Eighth Ave., said Assistant Fire Chief Brian Schaeffer.

Suspect arrested in north Spokane car thefts

Spokane police on Friday arrested a man suspected of trying to steal vehicles in an area plagued by vehicle thefts. Randy A. Norberg, 31, was arrested on two counts of attempted vehicle theft after someone reported seeing him prowling cars in an apartment complex at 49 E. Pine Ridge Court, according to Spokane police Officer Brian Eckersley.

Icy roads lead to school closures, delays

Icy roads following freezing rain are resulting in several school closures and delays. Kellogg School District and Lam Christian Academy in Coeur d'Alene are closed. Okanogan, Omak, Orchard Prairie, Warden and Reardan-Edwall school districts are reporting two hour delays. There is no morning kindergarten in the Reardan-Edwall School District. Authorities are responding to several crashes in the region this morning due to slick conditions. Among others, Spokane police are reporting a three-car crash at Appleway Blvd. and Dishman Mica Road, as well as several slide offs at Indian Trail Road and Strong Road. There's also were two rollover crashes near Old Trails Road and Trails Road, but those have been cleared. No serious injuries have been reported, according to Spokane police Officer Teresa Fuller. While the morning commute started out slippery, Fuller said the good news is "things are starting to clear up." The National Weather Service issued a freezing rain advisory early Friday morning for parts of the region including Spokane, Coeur d'Alene and Cheney. A winter weather advisory also is in effect for northeastern Washington and the north Idaho Panhandle until 4 p.m. today that could bring snow, sleet and freezing rain. There's also an rollover crash near Old Trails Road and Trails Road. It is unknown at this time whether anyone was injured in the collisions.

Jail ordered in assault case

A Spokane man accused of threatening to kill a woman and her baby pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree assault Thursday. A Spokane County Superior Court Judge sentenced 38-year-old Tedzo Baker II to three months in jail for each charge, with credit for time served.

Magazines to be available online at county library

The Spokane County Library District is adding online magazines to its collection. The library is using Zinio for Libraries, the world’s largest provider of online magazines, Communications Manager Jane Baker said in a news release. It allows cardholders to access 157 magazine titles online through the Spokane County Library District website, www.scld.org.

UI student found dead under bridge

A University of Idaho student froze to death under a bridge after leaving a fraternity party this weekend. Moscow police found the body of Joseph Wiederrick, 18, of Hailey, Idaho, under the Paradise Creek Bridge about 4 p.m. Monday, according to Moscow police Chief David Duke. Investigators believe alcohol use was a factor in the student’s death.

Mead High graduate plays in Marine Band

A Spokane native will perform at Monday’s presidential inauguration. Gunnery Sgt. Gregory Ridlington, a 1991 Mead High School graduate, is a saxophonist in “The President’s Own” U.S. Marine Band. The band will perform during the 57th Inauguration of President of the United States.

Batteries stolen from ‘Feed Spokane’ truck

Thieves have targeted a truck used to feed the hungry in Spokane County. Three heavy-duty batteries were stolen Monday from the Feed Spokane truck. The batteries were used to run the truck and its lift gate and refrigeration system.

Suspect goes free in naked burglar case

The alleged naked burglar, a registered sex offender suspected of breaking into a stranger’s Spokane apartment and disrobing last week, has been released from jail without any charges being filed against him. Trevor Lee Franklin, 22, was freed Monday from the Spokane County Jail. The Spokane County Prosecutor’s Office didn’t file formal charges against Franklin within the mandatory 72-hour window because Spokane police didn’t get the required reports turned in.

Spokane police officers believe they nabbed a naked burglar. Trevor Lee Franklin, a 22-year-old registered sex offender, entered a stranger’s Browne’s Addition apartment and disrobed just before 11 p.m. Tuesday, according to police spokeswoman Officer Jennifer DeRuwe.

Spokane police officers believe they have nabbed the naked burglar. Trevor Lee Franklin, 22, was arrested on suspicion of residential burglary in Browne’s Addition about 11 p.m. Tuesday. They think he may be the same man caught on camera prowling with his pants down in the Manito area Sunday.
