Ferris Senior Has Bad Day, Finishes 26th

Isaac Hawkins prepared all year for one cross country race. Not the Region IV-AAA or State AAA meets, both of which he won. Not last week's Foot Locker West Regional, at which he placed fourth and qualified for nationals. What the Ferris High senior aimed for all year was Foot Locker's national championship race, which took place Saturday in San Diego.

Tigers have to contend with high-powered Loggers in finale The 10 Washington high school teams still playing football had the option of practicing in the Tacoma Dome Thursday. B-8 finalist Crescent chose not to take advantage of the offer. That prompted Odessa's Myron Kramer, who coaches the other B-8 finalist, to quip: "As bad as they're beating people, they don't need to practice."

State volleyball Bethel couldn't have played better. That was the case Saturday night. Then again, that was the case all year. The Braves capped a 34-0 season by beating Prairie 15-5, 15-4 in the State AAA volleyball championship match at the Arena.

State Draw Seems Ok To Coaches

State volleyball Mead and Ferris both reacted positively Sunday after learning their assignments for one of the oddest State AAA volleyball tournaments in memory. Ferris' Pool A and Mead's Pool C are generally free of teams that traditionally succeed at state.
