Isaac Hawkins prepared all year for one cross country race. Not the Region IV-AAA or State AAA meets, both of which he won. Not last week's Foot Locker West Regional, at which he placed fourth and qualified for nationals. What the Ferris High senior aimed for all year was Foot Locker's national championship race, which took place Saturday in San Diego.

B-8 finalist Crescent chose not to take advantage of the offer. That prompted Odessa's Myron Kramer, who coaches the other B-8 finalist, to quip: "As bad as they're beating people, they don't need to practice."
