Night session The people directly involved in the action had different responses when Nick Andrew fouled out Wednesday. Toutle Lake coach Eric Swanson, watching his big man take a seat on the bench, thought, "Well, it's not the first time this has happened this season." Garfield-Palouse coach Tim Coles, whose team trailed 67-59 when the 6-foot-5 Andrew sat down at the 2:56 mark, mused, "Now we have to get the ball inside. We have to take advantage of this."

Lions Introduce The Wave To Ukraine

Snohomish County Christian boys players have traveled to the Ukraine the last two summers to conduct a camp for 500 underprivileged children. Ben Swetman and Jason Hudson, son of coach Steve Hudson, spent two months in the former Soviet Union last summer.

Area Teams Open With East Valley

State A Tournaments Vastly different East Valley (Yakima) teams will challenge local entries when WIAA/U.S. Bank Class A basketball tournaments begin Wednesday at the Tacoma Dome. The seventh-ranked Riverside girls (19-5) open against the top-ranked EV Red Devils (23-0) at 6:30 p.m. Medical Lake (17-5), making its sixth consecutive state appearance, inaugurates the boys tournament at 9 a.m. against a Red Devils team that squeezed in with an 11-12 record.

Pairings Align Teams For State B Play Boys Draw Splits Area Teams

Tim Coles and Jay Aune sat in the same row Sunday morning as the brackets were drawn for this week's WIAA/U.S. Bank State B Boys Basketball Tournament. They aren't in the same row now. Coach Coles' sixth-ranked Garfield-Palouse Vikings (22-3) landed in an 8 p.m. opening-day game against fifth-ranked Toutle Lake (22-1). Gar-Pal and Toutle Lake played last year for fourth and seventh places, with the Ducks prevailing.

Groom Misses Gsl’s Run On 108-Pounders

Daryl Groom must have agonized while keeping tabs on the 108-pound division at Mat Classic VII. Greater Spokane League wrestlers earned three semifinal positions last weekend during the Class AAA state wrestling meet at the Tacoma Dome. Cory Brannon of Gonzaga Prep ultimately topped the field, defeating Mead's Jon Rugan in the final. Central Valley's Shane Cunanan made it a 1-2-3 sweep for the GSL by finishing third.

Inaccurate Score Sends Ducks Into Nose Dive

B basketball notebook Garbage in, garbage out. This week's Associated Press high school basketball poll showed Curlew taking over the No. 1 position among Class B boys teams. Toutle Lake dropped from No. 1 to No. 5. Voters were apparently swayed by a score that ran on the Associated Press wires Friday night: Lake Quinault 58, Toutle Lake 50.

Turns out that Miller can't say for sure. But he has figured out that Riverside's Northeast A title this season was the school's first in at least 20 years.

Davenport Thumps W-C In Bi-County Showdown

The Class B girls basketball ranks lost another undefeated team Saturday, and Jennifer Stinson didn't need any deep thinking to figure out why. "It was the running game that got them," Stinson said after scoring 30 points to lead fourthranked Davenport (9-0, 15-1) to a 61-41 Bi-County League win over third-ranked Wilbur-Creston (9-1, 15-1).

Pirate Gives All; CV Falls

Prep wrestling Mark Rinde is paying for his shift to 148 pounds, but not until his matches are over. Wiped out after his gyrating, no-backing-down win over Central Valley's Shane Yackel on Thursday, Rinde collapsed on his back for several minutes. After he'd had extra time to compose himself, Rinde summed up his crucial match during Rogers' 32-26 Greater Spokane League wrestling win over the previously unbeaten Bears (2-1).
