Sojo’s Stab Pierces Hearts Of The Angels

With one swat in the seventh inning, Luis Sojo broke his bat - and the hearts and hopes of the California Angels along with it. "That hit by Luis is the one that broke our hearts," Angel Chili Davis said of the key sequence in the Seattle Mariners' 9-1 demolition of California in the Kingdome Monday.

Cougars, Bulldogs Plan To Shoot It Out In Arena

Mark Nov. 24 on your calendars - the date of the inaugural Kelvin Sampson Basketball Classic. O.K., it's actually the date the Washington State and Gonzaga men's basketball teams renew their rivalry in the first collegiate basketball game scheduled for the new Spokane Arena. And they'll really call it Shootout Spokane - the 1995 version of what previously had been a four-team tournament hosted at the Martin Centre by Gonzaga.

Dreamy Return Sparks Cougs

Key play Let's not even discuss what Sigmund Freud might have made of one of Jay Dumas' common dreams. It's the one where he's running free on a field of green, with a pack of athletic men in full, but futile, pursuit.

Bengals: QB David Klingler (jaw) and TE Troy Sadowski (shoulder) are out; CB Mike Brim (back), DE Ty Parten (thumb) and DT Keith Rucker are doubtful; RB Jason Burns (hamstring), RB Harold Green (ankle), WR Jeff Hill (concussion), CB Corey Sawyer (shoulder) and CB Chris Shelling (hamstring) are probable. Notable The Bengals have won three of four games inside the Kingdome, including victories in the last two. Last year's Bengals win came in overtime. Surprisingly, the Bengals have the best overtime record in the NFL, having won all four such contests. Cincinnati leads the NFL in sacks with 11, picking up seven against Jacksonville last week. Last year, the Bengals didn't get their first sack until the fourth game. Seattle's defense has been the most generous in the league - worse, even, than the two expansion teams. Defensive efficiency, meanwhile, is 29th in the NFL (yielding an average of 6.38 yards per play). The Hawks also have the worst kickoff coverage in the league. The Seahawks have a bye next week before playing host to Denver Oct.1. Analysis Didn't someone title this a game between Numb and Numb-er? Actually, that's not fair to the Bengals, who have won both times out this year. Seattle can't really worry too much about the opponent this week, but must, rather, concentrate on executing their own offensive and defensive schemes. In their first two games, the Hawks' mental mistakes have doomed them to defeat. Quarterback overthrows, blown coverages, mis-reads - they've had them all, making this look like a team that is much worse than it probably really is. Clearly, Seattle has the talent to win this game. But if the Hawks don't play smarter than they have, no game is a sure thing. Use quarterback Rick Mirer as a guide. If he can snap out of his slump, the Hawks can win. But another effort like last Sunday's against San Diego means that the Hawks limp into their bye week shouldering an 0-3 record.

For Old Pros, It’s All Play And No Work

If you're wondering what happens to old golf pros once they retire, the answer is simple. They keep golfing. In most cases, a lot more than when they worked at area golf courses.

Erickson Keeps Head Up

Dennis Erickson stressed what he sees as an important distinction Wednesday. That his Seattle Seahawks have lost a game. But not their optimism. "The mental mindset is good," the Seahawks coach said of his team's attitude after Sunday's dismal 34-10 season-opening loss to Kansas City.

Erickson’s Ultimatum Threatens Vets

If a single message has been transmitted by the Seahawks coaching staff during the preseason, it is this: Perform or sit. Coach Dennis Erickson let everyone know from the day of his hiring that he had a slim margin of tolerance for anything short of full effort.
