Don’t blame assessors for tax shift

In today's editorial, Opinion Editor Marty Trillhaase of the Lewiston Tribune comments that property owners shouldn't blame county assessors when their taxes go up. The Idaho Legislature is responsible for the tax shift. The Legislature sided with commercial, industrial and agricultural interests when they froze the homeowners exemption.

Edit: Time to cancel fireworks show?

The Coeur d'Alene Chamber of Commerce dutifully put on the annual 4th of July fireworks display, to the delight of 30,000 onlookers. However, the chamber went in the hole $9,000 to put on the show. The bucket brigade which rolled down the parade route earlier in the day collected only $1,435. Is it time to end the CdA fireworks on the 4th?

Crash injures 3 Legion officers

Three officers from Post Falls American Legion Post 143 were injured in a crash on Highway 95, just south of Plummer Saturday. Ron Johnson, judge advocate for Post 143, confirmed the officers involved in the crash were Commander Dennis Wheeler, Vice Commander Doug Wheeler and Adjutant Chuck Buttz.

One of the things you should know about Chief Morris Antelope, before a statue of him is dedicated at Coeur d'Alene Monday, is the meaning of his Coeur d'Alene name, Ats’qhule’khw – "Looks at the land." And he did. Chief Antelope ranched and farmed thousands of acres on the Palouse. Also, he spoke both English and Coeur d'Alene. And was a respected spokesman for Inland Northwest tribes. Also, he has a great-great-grandson in a high position with the tribe today.

Waste Management picked up their garbage bins this week, ending speculation in my neighborhood about the delay in doing so. How about you? Five $1,000 scholarships ($5,000 total) will be raffled off at the North Idaho College Cecil’s Summer Splash Thursday, July 21. Male flees liquor store, female hurt

Arthur J. Harp, a man wanted on felony warrants in Idaho and Washington, eluded officers and remains on the loose after fleeing the State Line Liquor Store in a car this morning. A female with Harp either was pushed or jumped from the vehicle as it left the parking lot and was knocked unconscious. She is now in stable condition.
