3 Had Passion For Firefighting

The men who died Thursday fighting a fire near Twisp were a college physics student who had a passion for theater, an outdoorsman who recently hiked the Pacific Crest Trail and the son of a firefighter who yearned for a career in the Forest Service. Tom Zbyszewski, 20; Andrew Zajac, 26; and Richard Wheeler, 31, died this week.

In meeting with the media Thursday, University of Idaho Athletic Director Rob Spear and head football coach Paul Petrino disputed a column by Moscow-Pullman Daily News sports editor. Michael-Shawn Dugar said Petrino had exploded at him for an article mildly critical of the Vandals' passing attack & banned him from the practice field.

Local Churches Pray For Rain

Climatologist Cliff Harris called over 100 churches in the area and asked them to pray for rain in their services. Harris is expecting rain later this month. But a good soaking rain is needed now to help firefighters fighting devastating wildfires throughout the region. Harris told the Coeur d'Alene Press that the response has been very positive.

Twisp Fire Victims’ Names Aired

The three firefighters killed Wednesday in Twisp were Tom Zbyszewski, 20, Andrew Zajac, 26 and Richard Wheeler, 31.. All three were U.S. Forest Service firefighters. The three men were killed after a vehicle they were driving in crashed and was enveloped by flames. All of the SR's fire coverage is free today.

New Winton Dedication Monday

The new Winton Elementary school will open on Monday to greet families, staff and neighbors. A dedication and ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place at 10 a.m. on Monday. The new 52,000-square-foot building sits on the site of the former 89-year-old school at 920 W. LaCrosse Ave., Coeur d'Alene.

PFPD Wants Help w/Car Burglaries

On Wednesday night, Post Falls PD arrested a number of people involved in burglarizing cars in the Idahline Road area, on the west end of Post Falls. However, few residents have reported car burglaries today. The PFPD requests that individuals who think they have been burglarized to call the department, 773-3517.
