Chiefs’ power play on the fritz in loss to Hawks

The power went out at the Arena – make that stayed out – but only on the Spokane side of the Western Hockey League game against Portland on Saturday night. The Chiefs had a nice shot advantage but went 0 for 9 on the power play and the Winterhawks posted a 2-1 win, their 10th straight at the Arena.

Last-minute deflection dooms Chiefs

The Spokane Chiefs had eight power plays and peppered Portland’s net with 48 shots, only to see the Winterhawks win their ninth straight game at the Arena dating back to the start of last season. It was a shot by defenseman Taylor Aronson that deflected off the rear end of a Spokane defenseman with 29 seconds to play that gave Portland a 3-2 win on Friday night.

Chiefs’ Cowen almost stuck with NHL

Jared Cowen isn’t the happiest Spokane Chief right now, but a big dose of the Portland Winterhawks should fix that. Portland, which knocked out the Chiefs in the first round of the Western Hockey League playoffs last spring by winning all four games in Spokane in the best-of-7 series, returns to the Arena for games tonight and Saturday.

Home is where … GU would like to be to start NCAA tourney

There are plenty of ways to put pressure on the Gonzaga University women’s basketball team, so a little thing like being host for the first weekend of the NCAA tournament – which translates into being expected to be there – doesn’t change things much. “We’ve always approached it as the next game is the only thing that’s important,” veteran coach Kelly Graves said. “We’ve been fortunate to have the kind of group that is able to focus one step at a time, but it’s out there. I think it’s a really good incentive. We’re going to welcome that kind of pressure, or however you want to put it, to ensure that we’re playing at home at the end of the year.”

Big season in store for women’s basketball

There are plenty of ways to put pressure on the Gonzaga women’s basketball team, so a little thing like being host for the first weekend of the NCAA tournament – which translates into being expected to be there – doesn’t change things much. “We’ve always approached it as the next game is the only thing that’s important,” veteran coach Kelly Graves said. “We’ve been fortunate to have the kind of group that is able to focus one step at a time, but it’s out there. I think it’s a really good incentive. We’re going to welcome that kind of pressure, or however you want to put it, to ensure that we’re playing at home at the end of the year.” The Bulldogs started practice Monday – new legislation allowed women’s teams to start as early as Sunday – with a goal of reaching the NCAA tournament for the third straight season and fourth overall, all under Graves, who is starting his 11th season. Last season was the high-water mark for the Zags, a trip to the Sweet 16 and a Top 20 ranking to go with their sixth straight West Coast Conference title. “We recruit players that are driven; we’re driven,” Graves said. “Not to put pressure on, our girls have handled pressure for years. It’s not as if this is the first time we’ve gone into the season as the reigning champ or the team to beat. We’re a little bit used to it.” Then he pointed to all the banners in the rafters at McCarthey Athletic Center and added, “Let’s face it, it’s part of the culture here at GU.” If the Bulldogs could make another trip to the Sweet 16 it would be much easier than it was last year when they went to Sacramento and lost to Xavier to finish 29-5. After the Bulldogs host first- and second-round games, Washington State will be hosting a regional at the Spokane Arena for the third time.

Chiefs notes: Nachbaur lights fire

The last portion of the Spokane Chiefs’ practice Wednesday was dedicated to power plays and penalty killing, a necessity for all hockey teams. Otherwise, the Chiefs have spent a lot of time doing drills that involved fostering competition, the result of a dismal effort in the Western Hockey League opener, a 6-3 loss at Tri-City on Saturday.

Prep roundup: Top-ranked NC turns back Tigers

Two of the best cross country runners in the West were to square off Wednesday afternoon at Mead, but Shadle Park’s Nathan Weitz’s illness left the Mead Panthers’ Andrew Gardner to run alone. But that individual showdown in the Greater Spokane League was replaced by a high-stakes team battle at Audubon Park.

Chiefs’ competition within and without

The games count now, but the sense is training camp isn’t quite over for the Spokane Chiefs, who open the Western Hockey League season tonight at Tri-City. “The initial phase of training camp is over now with the numbers cut down, (but) there is still a battle for pecking order,” first-year coach Don Nachbaur said.

New-look Chiefs ready to start season

The Spokane Chiefs have some big holes to fill as their Western Hockey League season gets under way Saturday with a trip to rival Tri-City. Gone are a pair of forwards who combined for 82 goals and 182 points, a pair of defensemen with 76 assists and 92 points, plus the steadying influence from a couple of other veterans.

It would seem the second weekend of preseason games was a rousing success for the Spokane Chiefs. Minus a few veterans, the Chiefs put a 7-2 whippin’ on Lethbridge before losing to Tri-City, 2-1.
