GSL sends strong contingent to state

YAKIMA – When Ferris senior Natalie Kyllo stepped into the discus for her last throw of the 4A/3A Eastern Regional track meet Saturday afternoon, four competitors were ahead of her. When she stepped out she was in third, a trip to the state meet next week in her pocket because she finally broke loose, improving about 6 feet to 129 feet, 10 inches.

Shaley Ham turned out for track as a freshman to high jump, but in her senior year the high jump had turned on her. A consistent 5-footer and a state placer for Cheney as a sophomore, Ham’s senior year started out just fine with a 5-2 clearance in the Blackhawks’ jamboree.

Two Baileys scorch 200s

A double shot of high-octane Baileys steamed around the corner at the Spokane Falls Community College track Friday night, highlighting an outstanding finish to the District 8 Track and Field Championships. In back-to-back 200-meter races, Rogers’ Cor’de Bailey and Mead’s Wes Bailey both broke 22 seconds, putting the sprinters on equal footing with record-breaking distance runners as Greater Spokane League athletes took advantage of ideal conditions.

With Meriweather among those coming up big, the depleted Blackhawks captured the Great Northern League track championship by turning back hopeful West Valley and Pullman at Tom Oswald Field in Cheney.

Shae Carson became a discus thrower when she was about five weeks old, but the Coeur d’Alene senior didn’t know it until last spring. In between, she was just another multitalented young athlete doing a bit of everything and enjoying it all. But a couple of track guys, Bart Templeman and Bud Rasmussen, saw so much more in the young lady with the long limbs of a 6-footer and nimble feet.

There isn’t much Joan Samuelson hasn’t seen as a runner, and that includes Bloomsday, but the 1984 Olympic gold medal marathoner admitted she was a little awestruck Sunday morning. “Hey, just the fact I can get out here and compete and run, I’m not complaining,” the 54-year-old Maine native said. “This is only my second time here. It’s like sleep deprivation as a young parent: You forget what it’s all about until the second one comes around.

The move paves the way for all the Class B schools to again play in Spokane, although that is not official.
