Still top dog

On a day when the Gonzaga women’s basketball program said goodbye to its most prolific offensive player, the Bulldogs once again made a statement with defense. The 21st-ranked Zags locked up a share of their sixth straight West Coast Conference championship Saturday afternoon with an impressive 87-45 Senior Day drubbing of third-place Pepperdine before 4,829 fans, the third-largest McCarthey Athletic Center crowd for a women’s game.

Legacy of high standards

As records tumble and awards mount, Heather Bowman continues to say her only goal was to become a starter for Gonzaga when she crossed Interstate 90 from Lewis and Clark High School. That, and help build something special in the process.

Panthers girls topple Lewis and Clark

The history books will show fourth-seeded Mead won the District 8 4A girls basketball championship, but the Panthers won’t remember it that way. “With the way our teams beat each other, seedings didn’t matter,” Mead coach Regan Drew said. “It was going to be a tough matchup.”

Scott enjoys revival

Nicole Scott was looking for a good college experience after she finished high school in Carson City, Nev., so she signed at Eastern Washington. She assumed basketball would take care of itself since the Eagles had appeared in seven straight Big Sky Conference tournaments. It didn’t quite work out that way for the 6-foot-2 senior forward, but she’s not complaining.

It’s a Beach party for surging Chiefs

The Spokane Chiefs are hot, Kyle Beach is hotter. For the second straight game, the Chiefs won in overtime, a 3-2 decision over Everett before a Monday afternoon crowd of 4,829 at the Arena, their fourth straight win and eighth in the last 10 games.

Chiefs survive thriller

The Western Hockey League playoffs may not start for a month, but you won’t convince the sellout crowd of 10,530 at the Arena they saw anything less than a playoff game Saturday night. Kyle Beach completed his hat trick by poking the puck across the goal line with 48.2 seconds left in overtime to lift the Spokane Chiefs to a wild 4-3 win over the Tri-City Americans.

Chiefs break through

All good things come to an end, and so do bad things. That was the case at the Arena Wednesday night when the Spokane Chiefs ended Everett’s 14-game winning streak with a solid 2-1 win.

Bowman sets Gonzaga scoring mark

Don’t think the Heather Bowman Watch is going to end any time soon. The prolific Gonzaga senior, who set the West Coast Conference women’s basketball scoring record two weeks ago, added the school record to her list of accomplishments Saturday afternoon during the Bulldogs’ 93-53 win over San Francisco before 3,202 fans at McCarthey Athletic Center.

Hard at home

The home struggles continue for the Spokane Chiefs. The Kootenay Ice ignored an Arena crowd of 9,265 and beat the Chiefs 4-3 for the third time this season.

Gonzaga women roll on

Courtney Vandersloot had another big all-around game and Heather Bowman inched closer to the school scoring record as the Gonzaga women’s basketball team destroyed Santa Clara 81-43 before 2,419 fans at McCarthey Athletic Center Thursday night. Vandersloot had 19 points, eight assists, seven steals, three rebounds and no turnovers in a team-high 28 minutes to help the (17-4, 6-0) build a 40-point lead before the midway point of the second half when reserves took over.

Women’s notebook: Cougs focus on UW

There isn’t a hint of frustration in June Daugherty’s voice. Her Washington State women’s basketball team is in the cellar of the Pacific-10 Conference, having just lost to the two southern California schools that share second place.

Cohen shows old form

Maybe Mirai Nagasu is out to change the world order, which may just happen if she changes the pecking order in women’s figure skating. But it won’t be easy, not with the way Sasha Cohen skated in her comeback.

Partners Agosto-Belbin still burn with competitive fire

There’s nothing more dangerous than a hungry predator, which doesn’t really seem to fit with the image of Ice Dancing. But Tanith Belbin and Ben Agosto certainly appear ravenous to reclaim their spot in skating hierarchy.

Rarefied heights for Eagles

It’s been so long since the Eastern Washington women’s basketball team started 5-0 in conference play that it might be as hard for fans to guess what conference, let alone what year. It was 25 years ago when the Eagles got off to a 5-0 start in the Mountain West Athletic Conference, which joined the Big Sky Conference in 1988-89.
