GU women ecstatic to start tournament in Seattle

None of the season-long prognosticators ever penciled Gonzaga University into the Seattle pod for the NCAA women’s basketball tournament, but once the Bulldogs secured their bid by winning the West Coast Conference tournament in Las Vegas, they had a full week to dream. Senior forward Vivian Frieson never lost faith.

Playoff time

Pride trumps probability, or at least animosity. The Spokane Chiefs proved that to 9,204 fans at the Arena on Sunday night by closing out the Western Hockey League regular season by smothering the Everett Silvertips 3-2 when in the long run a loss might have been more beneficial in the playoffs.

Portland St. wins, earns first NCAA bid

All the frustrations of an underachieving women’s basketball season were erased Saturday afternoon when Portland State achieved its first berth in the NCAA tournament. Led by the determination of point guard and MVP Claire Faucher, the Vikings won the Big Sky Conference tournament with a 62-58 victory over Montana State before 551 fans at Reese Court.

Missed chance

On to Plan B. Needing a win to keep alive hopes of finishing first in the Western Hockey League’s Western Conference, the Spokane Chiefs fell flat, dropping a 4-3 decision to rival Tri-City before a sold-out crowd of 10,528 at the Arena on Friday night.

Chiefs fall short

On to Plan B. With no less than a tie for first-place and at best the top-seed in the Western Conference for the Western Hockey League season the Spokane Chiefs fell flat, dropping a 4-3 decision to rival Tri-City before a sold-out crowd of 10,528 at the Arena Friday night.

Eastern faces red-hot Cats

As time wound down on sixth-seeded Montana State’s 89-66 rout of No. 3 Sacramento State in the first round of the Big Sky Conference women’s basketball tournament at Reese Court Thursday night, Eastern Washington coach Wendy Schuller considered the difficulty of beating a team three times in one season. “The one thing is Montana State showed it could be done,” Schuller said of the Eagles’ opponent in tonight’s second semifinal.

Big Sky field even as it gets

If it’s the unknown that draws fans to sporting events, the Big Sky Conference women’s basketball tournament is made to order. The difference between the six teams gathering in Cheney is razor thin, starting with their records.

Chiefs turn back Kelowna to gain on Everett, idle Tri-City

As a potential playoff preview, this had to be a confidence builder. The Spokane Chiefs got offense from three lines, played solid defense, had effective special teams and got big saves when needed to defeat the Kelowna Rockets 5-2 before 4,643 fans at the Arena Tuesday night.

Playoff positioning on line for Chiefs

The final weekend of the Western Hockey League season couldn’t be any more intriguing for the Spokane Chiefs if it had been scripted. The Chiefs play four games, three at home, beginning tonight with a visit from Kelowna. A home-and-home follows with rival Tri-City with the first game at the Arena on Friday. The season ends with Everett coming in on Sunday.

EWU proves its standing

In a meaningless game that they made important, the Eastern Washington Eagles turned back Portland State 78-68 Saturday afternoon at Reese Court. Eastern, coming off four straight losing seasons, clinched its first Big Sky Conference women’s basketball championship Friday night when Idaho State beat Sacramento State.

Defense rules 2B girls

With the way defense decided the State 2B girls basketball tournament semifinals at the Arena on Friday night, it’s hard to imagine what might transpire tonight when the past two champions, La Salle and Colfax, square off. La Salle, the 2008 champion, set the tone with a 45-27 win over Napavine and defending champ Colfax followed suit with a 42-33 win over Toutle Lake.

Bulldogs scrap

The girls State 2B basketball tournament got off to an ominous start for Colfax. The defending champions missed their first 14 shots. None was taken by reigning MVP Kayla Johnson, who was on the bench after picking up two fouls in the second minute of the game.

Eagles have title in sight

The Eastern Washington women’s basketball team has gone through some tough times recently, but the Eagles’ perseverance is about to be rewarded. Already qualified for the Big Sky Conference tournament after a three-year absence and assured of a share of their first conference title, the Eagles can win the championship and host the tourney for the first time with a win against Portland State at Reese Court Saturday afternoon.

She still gets State B jitters

A funny thing happens to Aileen McManus on the eve of the State B basketball tournament. She gets nervous. That’s not unusual for a Reardan girl, until you realize it has been more than 25 years since she was the Indians’ star.

One step closer

There isn’t much more you can expect from a Tri-City visit to Spokane for a Western Hockey League showdown. Well, maybe a few skirmishes for old-time’s sake, but with the regular season down to two weeks and playoff positions unsettled, the players weren’t going down that path.

Chiefs beat Americans, 5-2

There isn’t much more you can expect from a Tri-City visit to Spokane for a Western Hockey League showdown. Well, maybe a few skirmishes for old-time sake but with the regular season down to two weeks and playoff positions unsettled the players weren’t going down that path. Instead they treated a soldout crowd of 10,529 at the Arena to an intense battle the Chiefs won by the deceptive score of 5-2, decided on Kenton Miller’s empty net goal in the final minute.

Chiefs ease to win

There are two unwritten rules for Homecoming games – make sure it’s a good time for the alumni and schedule a patsy. The Spokane Chiefs were wildly successful on both accounts Friday night. A pregame ceremony honored the Top 25 Chiefs in 25 years, with 16, including four current players, in attendance. Then the near-hapless Prince George Cougars skated onto the ice for the formality of a 5-1 Spokane win, highlighted by a hat trick from one of current 25, Spokane native Tyler Johnson.

Chiefs lay egg

It certainly wasn’t what fans have come to expect, not from a team riding a seven-game winning streak. But the Spokane Chiefs were not sharp by any stretch of the imagination and in a critical Western Hockey League showdown with Everett, the Silvertips put an end to the Chiefs’ run with a 2-1 win before 4,511 fans at the Arena on Wednesday night.

It’s all about team

Angie Bjorklund was named the Southeastern Conference Player of the Week, which never came up in a conversation last week. But that’s hardly surprising. Until last week the Tennessee junior out of University High School had no idea she was on the verge of reaching the 1,000-point plateau.

Ultimate Chief

From the first time Mitch Wahl tied the laces at the age of 5, he was a natural on skates. Now, almost 15 years later, that natural ability is on display as his Western Hockey League career is down to 10 games and playoffs. “I’ve tried to put everything aside and I’m just looking to get as many wins as I can,” Wahl said. “Being a veteran … I’m just trying to step up.”
