Champs spiral downward

It didn’t take long to upset the apple cart at the 2010 U.S. Figure Skating Championships. With two-time defending champions Keauna McLaughlin and Rockne Brubaker tumbling to seventh, the standings from the Senior Pairs short program at the Arena Friday afternoon have a different look than was expected.

Nice statement

Don’t forget Jeremy Abbott. With all the attention that goes to Evan Lysacek and Johnny Weir – and deservedly so – it may seem like Abbott is an afterthought.

Czisny’s revival builds momentum

Weather permitting, Alissa Czisny might consider visiting a local bike shop this week to borrow some wheels for a spin on the Centennial Trail. Bicycle rides have contributed to Czisny’s revival from the time she finished third at the 2007 U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Spokane to her arrival this week as the defending U.S. champion.

Gonzaga women bully Gaels

The Louella Tomlinson Show came to McCarthey Athletic Center Thursday night, but no matter how well the 6-foot-4 Australian and Saint Mary’s play elsewhere the show bombs when Gonzaga is involved. Even if it appeared this one had the potential to be different – Tomlinson came in as the reigning West Coast Conference Player of the Week off a 35-point outing, and both monthly honors for this season – the Bulldogs pulled the curtain early, rolling to an 87-52 win.

Pair pursue happy return

Forgive Keauna McLaughlin and Rockne Brubaker if they’re a little giddy about skating in Spokane. They departed the 2007 U.S. Figure Skating Championships here as the Junior Pairs champions in their first year together.

Skaters return to one of their favorite venues

When the 2007 U.S. Figure Skating Championships were here, Spokane became as much a part of the story as the electrifying battle for the Senior Men’s title and the lack of electricity in the Senior Ladies’ competition. Spokane hospitality thrilled the fans, who bought a record 154,893 tickets to fill the Arena and the Convention Center even though it was a post-Olympic year. Their enthusiasm, in turn, thrilled the skaters.

Notebook: Kuipers in groove for Regis

In the shadow of the Rocky Mountains, Emily Kuipers has grown. Not taller – that 6-foot-5 player on the Regis University women’s basketball team is junior Salina Kuiper, who happens to be Kuipers’ roommate at the Division II school in Denver.

Chiefs end skid on late Spurgeon goal

The Spokane Chiefs made a statement Saturday night, much to the delight of 10,522 fans at the Arena. One night after playing the worst game anyone can remember in a 3-0 loss to Chilliwack, the Chiefs bounced back to stop league-leading Tri-Cities 2-1.

Gonzaga women ground Portland

Revenge for last year was more of a by-product of the statement that the Gonzaga women’s basketball team wanted to make about this year. The Bulldogs opened the West Coast Conference season before 3,208 fans at McCarthey Athletic Center Saturday afternoon with a 90-54 dismantling of Portland, the team that shocked them on their home court in the WCC opener last year.

Bruins dump Chiefs

Odds were the same ol’ story was going to play out at the Arena on Friday night. Chilliwack scored a power-play goal midway through the second period to take a 1-0 lead into the final 20 minutes against Spokane, and the Bruins were 15-1 when leading after two periods while the Chiefs were 0-11 when trailing.

Chilliwack freezes Chiefs

Odds were the same ol’ story was going to play out at the Arena Friday night. Chilliwack scored a power play goal in the middle of the second period to take a 1-0 lead into the final 20 minutes against Spokane and the Bruins were 15-1 when leading after two periods while the Chiefs were 0-11 when trailing. It didn’t help that the Chiefs had dropped five straight home games, all by one goal, but at the same time the Bruins 0-7 at the Arena in their brief history. So, what happened? Simple, take the odds. At least it wasn’t a one goal loss. Chilliwack goalie Lucas Gore made 28 saves, 13 in the third period when a Spokane turnover and a giveaway led to goals by Kevin Sundher and Ryan Howse, to saddle the Chiefs their second shutout of the season.

Bulldogs hold all the cards

Since the 2004-5 basketball season, when Gonzaga joined the 1996-97 Portland team to make it through the West Coast Conference season unscathed, the Bulldogs women have lost just seven of 70 conference games. Gonzaga, poised to capture a sixth straight title, has the talent to run the table again.

Chiefs forward Johnson owns Memorial Cup ring, gold medal

Basking in the glow of gold, Tyler Johnson fielded a tougher question than any other member of Team USA at the conclusion of the World Junior Hockey Tournament Tuesday night. It was the kind of question the Spokane Chiefs’ forward and Spokane Valley native loved to consider.

Blades edge Chiefs

It’s not a good sign when the top team in the Western Hockey League comes calling and gets a goal from its fourth line just 7:14 into the game. That should have been the first clue it was going to be a strange Tuesday for the 3,642 fans at the Arena as the two best defensive teams in the league got into an old-fashioned shootout.

Blades nip Chiefs

That should have been the first clue it was going to be a strange Tuesday for the 3,642 fans at the Arena as the two best defensive teams in the league got into an old-fashioned shootout. When the ice chips settled, Saskatoon, which had allowed 106 goals in 39 games, out-scored Spokane, which had given up 93 in the same number of games, 5-4 – with a scoreless third period.

Chiefs give Reid little help

It’s not often a goalie can give up more than double his league-leading average and still be the player of the game, but it happened at the Arena on Sunday night. James Reid thrilled a crowd of 7,476 fans with 36 mostly spectacular saves but it wasn’t enough as the Portland Winterhawks rallied for a 5-4 win with three unanswered goals in the third period, only the second time this season the Spokane Chiefs have lost after leading entering the third period.

GU women get back on track

The Gonzaga women’s basketball team got back on track Sunday afternoon, erasing the disappointment of a pair of losses to highly-ranked Big 12 Conference teams last weekend in Las Vegas with a 96-57 dismantling of UC Irvine. It was the stellar all-around play of Vivian Frieson and Bulldogs-at-their-best second half that pleased a nice crowd of 2,733 at McCarthey Athletic Center.

Vivian Frieson filled up the stat sheet with a season-high 25 points on 10-of-14 shooting, 11 rebounds, four assists, two steals and two blocks, plus the pregame comment that set the tone.

Spokane Chiefs goalie breaks the mold

Hardy Sauter described James Reid the best. “He’s different than different,” the Spokane Chiefs coach said. How much easier can he say your goalie doesn’t fit into the stereotype with left-handed relievers and field-goal kickers? “Stereotypically you can categorize goalies that way, and too often you’re correct,” Chiefs general manager Tim Speltz said, quick to point out that Reid didn’t fit the mold.
