Women’s notebook: Time to burst the bubble

It's the time of year when teams hoping to avoid having the word bubble associated with its name try to burst it by winning its league tournament. As the West Coast Conference champion and favorite to win the WCC tournament, bubble isn't linked to the Gonzaga women's basketball team.

Bulldogs sweep awards

Gonzaga wasn't quite perfect during the West Coast Conference women's basketball season and the postseason doesn't start until Thursday when the top-seeded Bulldogs meet Pepperdine. But the Zags were sure perfect when the league announced its postseason awards on Monday.

Twins will be ‘rivals’ for a day

Back when twins Theresa and Patty Elliot first started playing, the girls high school basketball program at Cheney was in its infancy. "Our freshman year we were horrible; we didn't even know how to do layups," Theresa Elliot-Cheslek said of those days in the early 1970s. "We practiced at 6 a.m. in jeans and T-shirts."

Kellerman’s Brave world

The spotlight from the NCAA men's basketball tournament has nothing on the bright lights from a high school state tournament. "They're different," said Brian Kellerman, who has experienced both. "But every parent will tell you it's more satisfying to see a smile on your kid's face for what they accomplished than what you did."

Fletchers, Lancers mesh

Even if it was as simple as a son following in his father's footsteps, the coaching staff for the Liberty girls at the State 2B basketball tournament would be interesting. Aaron Fletcher is coaching the Lancers, assisted by Chad Cornmesser, who was an assistant for the boys when Fletcher played in the state tournament in 1992. A few years before that, Cornmesser was the Lancers' quarterback in the State B-11 championship football game and his coach was Rod Fletcher.

Tekoa-Oakesdale sees title slip away

YAKIMA – Who is Ryker Van Belle and what is he doing hucking up a 3-pointer less than a minute after he first entered a state championship basketball game? Well, he's a 5-foot-8 freshman at Sunnyside Christian who scored less than three dozen points this season and none was meaningful to the outcome of a game.

Vikings win state title

YAKIMA – There are no secrets by the time two teams face each other for the fourth time – and that's this season. The Garfield-Palouse and Colton girls basketball rivalry goes back to grade school. By the time they hooked up in the championship game of the State 1B basketball tournament in the SunDome Saturday night, there was much scratching and clawing for every point between these teams that pride themselves on defense.

Colton, Garfield-Palouse will meet for crown

To understand how well the Gonzaga women's basketball team can play defense, check out the offense. Despite playing one of their worst 20-minute stretches of offensive basketball this season, the Bulldogs were barely threatened by a good San Diego team, pounding out a 76-60 West Coast Conference win before 2,333 fans in their final McCarthey Athletic Center game of the season Saturday afternoon.

Casto leads Ferris

The message was simple: Slow down, you're moving too fast. It took DeAngelo Casto a while to shift down but once he did Ferris shifted into high gear and rolled past Shadle Park 69-49 in the District 8 4A basketball championship game at Central Valley Friday night.

Sports awards definitely go South

A South Hill battle erupted Wednesday afternoon, but like the Rubber Chicken rivalry basketball game between Lewis and Clark and Ferris it was positive confrontation and there were no losers. The scene was the 30th annual Inland Northwest Sports Awards at the Spokane Convention Center and the two rival Greater Spokane League high schools took home four of the five major awards.
