Homecoming could put UI over top

Maybe, just maybe, this is the week the Idaho football team will play a complete game and the Vandals' effort will be rewarded with a win. Maybe, homecoming – with a 2 p.m. kickoff in the Kibbie Dome – can help make that difference.

Vandals throw true freshman into mix

Desperate times call for desperate measures. With starting quarterback Nathan Enderle out with a hand injury and inexperienced senior Brian Nooy scheduled to take over, Idaho coach Robb Akey took the unusual step of closing practice last week.

One for the record

The telephone often rings this time of year. It's only natural. Washington State is playing at Oregon on Saturday and back in 1984 Cougars running back Rueben Mayes sliced and diced the Ducks defense for an NCAA-record 357 yards.

Vandals pursue fresh start

With three consecutive losses leading to a 1-4 record and the baggage of seven consecutive losing seasons, it would appear the conditions are right for the Idaho football team to fold the tent heading to San Jose State for its second Western Athletic Conference game this afternoon. "Definitely not," sophomore safety Shiloh Keo said. "That's the biggest change from last year to this year. No one likes to lose on this team. That's the difference between the years.

Akey sees positives from injury

When the glass is half full, Robb Akey takes a big swallow before he declares it empty. Talking about the unexpected loss of starting quarterback Nathan Enderle, who had minor surgery on his throwing hand Monday, the Idaho football coach came up with a couple of positives.

Back on the farm

Those were the days. Pat Falloon and Ray Whitney lighting the lamp at a pace that was the hockey equivalent of arena football as the Spokane Chiefs were rolling to a Memorial Cup championship. Falloon occasionally thinks of those days when he's on a tractor or combine working the family farm in Foxwarren, Manitoba.

Vandals can’t take advantage

MOSCOW, Idaho – For the most part special teams were exceptional. Other than that, the Idaho Vandals didn't have much to get excited about in their matchup with No. 19 Hawaii. Despite matching a school record by throwing five interceptions, Colt Brennan displayed most of his Heisman-hopeful chops , and the Warriors rolled over the Vandals 48-20 in a Western Athletic Conference football game before 13,807 fans in the Kibbie Dome Saturday afternoon.

Vandals: Enderle endures challenging day

MOSCOW, Idaho – Nathan Enderle has taken almost every meaningful snap for the Idaho offense, but Saturday against Hawaii the Vandals quarterback watched the end of the first half from the sidelines as senior Brian Nooy took over. "He's a fifth-year senior. He's been around the block. He knows what he's doing," said Enderle, a redshirt freshman. "For me, whoever is going to help the team win I want in the game, whether it is me or Brian or anybody else."

No. 19 Hawaii at UI

Robb Akey joked before his first game as the Idaho football coach, "I thought it was important to have a warmup game." That opponent was top-ranked USC.

Big Sky notebook : Wulff ages during 3-0 start

It didn't seem like the Eastern Washington football team had much fun last season on the way to a 3-8 record after seven straight winning seasons. A year ago at this time EWU was 0-3, losing badly at Oregon State and West Virginia and then coming home for an inexplicable loss to Central Washington.

Crosstown cousins

WAC notebook: Ankle hobbles Jackson

We interrupt this potpourri of news from around the Western Athletic Conference to get right to the point for Idaho Vandals fans: Standout freshman running back Deonte Jackson is questionable for Saturday's game against high-flying Hawaii. Jackson sprained his left ankle in the third quarter of last week's 42-35 loss to Northern Illinois.

Vandals can’t put block on Husky offense

MOSCOW, Idaho – The Idaho Vandals marched smartly downfield to score touchdowns to open their last two football games. That didn't happen against Northern Illinois on Saturday, but after swapping three-and-outs with the Huskies the Vandals went 59 yards on their second possession, despite three penalties, to grab a 7-0 lead.
Sports

Vandals come up just shy

MOSCOW, Idaho – Most amazing. The Idaho Vandals made so many huge mistakes, yet Northern Illinois didn't escape the Kibbie Dome with its first win of the season until Nathan Enderle was sacked with 9 seconds left on a fourth-down play from the Huskies' 18.

MAC attack on tap

Despite a pair of respectable losses to Pac-10 teams sandwiched around a win, overconfidence won't be a factor for the Idaho Vandals when they close out their preconference football season against winless Northern Illinois this afternoon in the Kibbie Dome in Moscow, Idaho. "I think Northern Illinois is a darn good football team," Vandals coach Robb Akey said. "They're coming in 0-3, but they're not a 0-3 football team. They're kind of snakebit right now. … They're talented, hungry for a win. We're going to have our hands full."

WAC notebook: Tomey lashes limp Spartans

Things are a little tense in San Jose these days. After San Jose State lost 37-0 at Stanford, which, by the way, shouldn't be confused with USC or even Washington State, the Pac-10 teams that beat Idaho, the Spartans were called out by their coach.

QBs reflect present, future

PULLMAN – Alex Brink did what he was supposed to do. The Washington State senior completed 26 of 36 passes for 307 yards and four touchdowns to lead Washington State to a 45-28 win over Idaho in a non-conference football game at Martin Stadium Saturday night.

Man with a mission

Shiloh Keo is all about family. Written on the towel tucked into his waistband is "Ohana," and on the belt that holds up his football pants are "206" and "808." Ohana is Polynesian for 'family' and the numbers are area codes for northwest Washington and Hawaii where his family lives.

Opener a bit wacky

It took all of one conference game for the Western Athletic Conference to get interesting. Overshadowing Fresno State's near upset of Texas A&M and Boise State's flop at Washington was this little score out of Louisiana: WAC favorite Hawaii 45, WAC bottom dweller Louisiana Tech 44 – in overtime.

Jackson’s action thrills coach Akey

MOSCOW, Idaho – Deonte Jackson's first collegiate touchdown was a thing of beauty, but the final carry for the Idaho freshman may be more indicative of things to come. With the Vandals clinging to a 20-13 lead over Cal Poly Saturday afternoon at the Kibbie Dome, Jackson got the football eight times on the last nine snaps to chew up the remaining 4 minutes, 51 seconds of the game.
Sports

Vandals do just enough

MOSCOW, Idaho – What the Idaho Vandals lacked in execution they made up for with perseverance. Idaho made enough big plays on both sides of the football Saturday afternoon to turn back the stubborn Cal Poly Mustangs and pull out a 20-13 win in their home opener before 9,820 fans in the Kibbie Dome.

Vandals reverse their role

Thanks, but no thanks. That was the message from Robb Akey after Idaho kept the score almost three touchdowns closer than oddsmakers predicted when it opened its football season with 38-10 loss at top-ranked USC last weekend.

Heacock stayed for teammates

From the outside looking in, don't be surprised to learn Ryan Heacock is still playing football for the Idaho Vandals. There seem to be many reasons for him to toss his receiver gloves into the garbage, hang up his cleats and walk away. But he'll be there Saturday when the Vandals play their home opener against Cal Poly.

WAC teams aim to join heavyweights

Since there are not 10 schools in the Western Athletic Conference, Robb Akey's vow bodes well for Idaho football fans. "I don't believe we're going to end up in ninth place," the first-year head coach said. "I don't know where we're going to end up, but we're not going to end up ninth."
