Crosstown rivals face Part II

Both the Lake City and Coeur d'Alene football teams claim they played poorly when they faced off in the regular season. Both claim they played worse than the other team.

Panhandle Picks with Greg Lee

My excruciatingly long year finally ended, and I'm sad to report it ended much the way it played out. I lost last week. Co-worker James J. Meehan beat me on the tiebreaker. I still lead the series with Meehan (6-5-2), but I have no more cushion. This is the last Panhandle Picks for the season. I'll predict the outcome of this week's playoff games. At the bottom you'll find my picks to win the state titles in each classification.

Bulldogs, Bartlett claim second spots

LEWISTON – Nobody was going to pry the State 4A girls cross country runner-up trophy out of the hands of the Sandpoint Bulldogs. Third a year ago, Sandpoint, with essentially its team back intact, set the goal higher this season. The Bulldogs didn't disappoint.

Stone finishes third in state

LEWISTON – The expression on the face of Anna Stone as she turned the corner for the final 50 meters in the State 5A girls cross country meet told it all Saturday morning. Ahead by 20 meters halfway through the 3.1-mile race, the Coeur d'Alene High senior watched her lead evaporate as her swollen throat had difficulty filtering the dust churned up because of the sandy trails from the air.

Timberlake’s Lagrimanta easily defends state title

LEWISTON – Defending State 3A cross country champion Frank Lagrimanta probably could have jogged and still pulled off a repeat Saturday afternoon. So Lagrimanta, a senior at Timberlake, set an almost unachievable goal: He wanted to have the best time regardless of classification.

Undefeated Lake City dominates on defense

Going into the 2006 season, Lake City High football coach Van Troxel suspected his defense had the potential to be the best in school history. For the first eight weeks of the season, though, the Timberwolves defense had been overshadowed to a degree. In Lake City's 5A Inland Empire League-clinching victory Friday, the defense had a little bit of a coming out party.

Lake City expects hard task

Any other year and Lake City cross country coach Justin Taylor believes his boys team would win a state championship. Two things stand in the Timberwolves' way to make that possible Saturday. Make that two teams – Borah and Mountain View.

Hammons’ rare style works

Lake City High quarterback Garren Hammons doesn't have a prototype throwing delivery. "He's got horrible mechanics," Lake City coach Van Troxel said. "Mechanically, he's the worst one we've had."

Panhandle Picks with Greg Lee

For just the second time in the 13-year history of Panhandle Picks, I've lost the season battle. Yes, with one week left, I'm conceding. Former Lewiston High and University of Idaho football standout Brad Rice put the nail in the proverbial casket last week. Rice had a perfect week, picking all eight games correctly. I went 6-2 – although I came close, as did Lakeland, on my upset special.

Playoffs not decided quite yet

It's the final week of the regular season, and the 5A Inland Empire League title and two state playoff berths will be decided. On the surface, it would appear that all No. 1-ranked Lake City (8-0 overall, 2-0 league) and Coeur d'Alene (6-2, 1-1) must do is go through the motions Friday and they'll end up facing off the following week in the first round of the state playoffs.

Lake City joins Coeur d’Alene for State 5A volleyball

Jen Owen would like to think this was supposed to be the Lake City High volleyball team's route to state all along. The co-Inland Empire League champion Timberwolves earned a berth to state Saturday in a 5A play-in match, topping Timberline of Boise 25-19, 20-25, 25-17, 25-19 at Grangeville.

Sandpoint clinches state bid

SANDPOINT – Perhaps it wasn't razor-sharp precision. But the Sandpoint High volleyball team didn't need to be perfect Saturday afternoon. The versatile Bulldogs, playing at times as if it were a practice scrimmage instead of the 4A Region I championship, had no difficulties disposing of Lakeland 25-19, 25-15, 25-15.

All the way back

RATHDRUM – The Sandpoint High football team never trailed on Friday, but the Bulldogs never felt comfortable either. Not until the Bulldogs recovered an onside kick with 21 seconds remaining.

Bulldogs grow through adversity

Usually the Sandpoint High boys soccer team goes into the 4A state tournament either as the favorite or one of the favorites. Usually Sandpoint boasts one of the best win-loss records in the state field.

No time like now

Chad Beadell has been to state as a soccer player and he's taking his second Lake City High boys team to state as a coach. He was the backup goalie as a sophomore in 1993 when Coeur d'Alene won a state title. Then he went to Lake City when the school opened in 1994 and the Timberwolves took third and fifth his junior and senior years.

Lumberjacks live it up

The St. Maries High volleyball team doesn't make any effort to disguise its offense. The Lumberjacks' first option, second option and third option is junior outside hitter Shawna Heath. They have other capable hitters, but when St. Maries needs a big kill the ball is going to be set to Heath.

Weight work paying off

A member of Lewiston High School's chain gang – those guys who work the yardage markers during football games – had an astute observation as Coeur d'Alene raced away from the Bengals last Friday. "Lewiston is getting beat the way Lewiston used to beat teams – with speed," he said.

Vucinich, CdA put on show

LEWISTON – Good answer. For the Coeur d'Alene High football team, there weren't any signs of rust from a bye or any aftereffects from its last loss.

Lake City clinches

Often soccer coaches talk about that intangible one can never count on – luck. Certainly the Lake City High boys soccer team had its share of good fortune Thursday. But the Timberwolves were well prepared to benefit from a few strokes of fate, too, at the Irma Anderl Soccer Complex.

Panhandle Picks with Greg Lee

If you've noticed skid marks near our Coeur d'Alene office on Northwest Boulevard, don't be alarmed. That was yours truly finally putting a halt to a losing streak. I picked seven out of nine, topping Lakeland baseball coach Jason Bradbury, who was five of nine. I also pulled even in the overall standings. The scoreboard reads: Lee/Guests 49-21 (.700).

Stoll shows heart

SANDPOINT – Kurt Stoll figures he's one of the slowest running backs in the state. In fact, line up the Sandpoint High senior against the fastest running backs from the other 5A and 4A teams in the Inland Empire League for a 100-yard sprint and it wouldn't surprise Stoll if he finished last.

Powers guides Tigers to win

SPIRIT LAKE – Timberlake junior running back Nick Puckett thought he had let his team down when he fumbled the ball away at midfield with 3:44 remaining Friday. Timberlake's defense, though, gave the 3A Tigers another chance when they forced Lakeland to punt moments later. Then Puckett's offensive buddies did the same as the Tigers ran their 2-minute offense to perfection.

‘Good’ Lake City conquers CdA

The Lake City High volleyball team is, admittedly, either very, very good or very, very bad. There's not much in between for the Timberwolves. Facing perhaps their most critical Inland Empire League match, they found the good vibes more often than the bad Thursday.

Lake City prevails

Lake City High boys soccer coach Chad Beadell noticed junior forward Evan Palo limping midway in the second half Thursday afternoon. Palo's entire right leg was cramping. So Beadell called him over, worked over his leg and sent him back in 5 minutes later with instructions to keep attacking.

Bubba good as his name

RATHDRUM – It doesn't say "Bubba" on Bubba Bartlett's birth certificate. It should. It's really the only first name the Lakeland High three-sport standout has known. It says "Justin" on the birth certificate, but that's because Bubba's father signed off on the name while his wife was undergoing a C-section delivering their 8-pound, 2-ounce son.
