Lagrimanta, Poston defend 3A crowns

BOISE – The road to repeat state titles started off much slower than Frank Lagrimanta desired Friday morning. It was never in doubt that the Timberlake High senior would defend his 3A state title in the 3,200 meters. The question was, how fast would he run?

Bartlett battles for title

BOISE – A funny thing happened to Megan Bartlett on the final lap of the 3,200 meters. While trying to just finish the race and go for a good time – as she put it – the Sandpoint sophomore captured a State 4A title as the 89th annual Idaho track and field championships began a three-day run Thursday at Boise State University's Bronco Stadium.

Priest River, Bonners Ferry open with losses

ONTARIO, Ore. – The Priest River High baseball team's second trip to state started just like its first three years ago. But Spartans coach Ryan Bodecker hopes his team won't have the same two-and-out finish.

Lake City barges into 5A title picture

Winning has a way of developing poise. Case in point is the Lake City High baseball team. If any team is riding a wave of confidence heading into the State 5A tournament today, it's Lake City.

Passion and flair

Coeur d'Alene High softball standout Kylie Chandler brings a presence to the field. It's more like a swagger. She wants people to notice – whether she's in center field or at bat.

Timberlake big favorite to repeat in 3A track

The Timberlake High boys track team, the defending 3A state champion, takes a better, deeper squad to state than last year. Coach Brian Kluss says hold off on declaring his team a repeat champ just yet.

Twin Falls doubles up on state team titles

The Twin Falls High boys golf team came back to the field in the final day of the State 5A tournament Tuesday. The Bruins' first-day lead more than held up, though, as Twin Falls captured the state championship at the Lewiston Country Club with 592. Coeur d'Alene finished second, right where it left off after the first day, with 601, a stroke ahead of Eagle.

Badgers walk away with crown

The Bonners Ferry High baseball team used a bases-loaded walk to survive a 12-inning marathon and capture the 3A District I championship Saturday at Timberlake H.S. Hitless for eight innings, Bonners Ferry coupled two hits with an error to load the bases before Josh Hawks watched a 3-1 pitch sail outside, bringing in the deciding run in a 3-2 victory over defending district champion St. Maries at Timberlake High School.

Host Lewiston likes Vikings’ state chances

Lewiston High boys golf coach Shawn Nilsson knows his team will benefit from home-course knowledge when the State 5A tournament is held Monday and Tuesday at the Lewiston Country Club. Nilsson also believes he knows which team could win the state championship.

Terrifying Tigers

Brian Kluss believes his Timberlake High boys track team couldn't have performed much better Saturday. Perhaps the only way the Tigers can top what they did to the 3A District I field is to repeat as state champions.

Trojans triumph

The Post Falls High softball team moved within a win of being a playing state host instead of a working state host. Third-seeded Post Falls knocked off No. 2 Lake City for a second time in three days Thursday as the Trojans pulled out a 3-1 win in a 5A Region I loser-out game at LC.

CdA boys win ‘ugly’

Through the early part of the 5A Region I golf tournament Wednesday, Coeur d'Alene High boys coach Bryan Duncan could tell the state-qualifying round was developing into one of survival, not a record-breaking round. Duncan's five golfers had knocked six shots out of bounds in the first six holes at the Prairie Falls Golf Club's forgiving front nine. Things wouldn't get much better when the Vikings reached the tightly designed back nine.

Vikings state case

Something striking occurred moments after the Coeur d'Alene High softball team captured its sixth straight 5A Region I championship Tuesday afternoon. To a player, the Vikings walked through the postgame line after downing Post Falls 5-1 and retreated to the dugout as if it were just another win.

LC whips CdA

The Lake City High baseball team hasn't won nine straight games by accident. Perhaps the sixth inning Monday was a microcosm of why the Timberwolves finished the regular season on a hot streak and picked right back up in their 5A Region I opener.

A challenging day

Usually, wind chill isn't something to be alarmed about unless one is skiing or snowmobiling. A strong wind out of the west, which was especially challenging to sprinters, had track and field athletes and spectators scrambling for extra layers of clothing Thursday afternoon at the eighth annual District I Meet of Champions.

For her, sky’s the limit

Brenna Lawson was well over the bar, positioned 11 feet and 4 inches above the ground, when she nudged it with her left hip on her final vault. The bar fell a second after the Lake City High senior hit the padded pole vault pit below. Lawson bounced back up, frustrated that her attempt to break her school record was foiled again last Friday at the Inland Empire League track meet.

Jack Blair game lineups star-studded

The 14th annual Jack Blair Memorial Girls AAU All-Star Basketball Classic probably won't be much different than the first 13 games between the Metro and Region teams. The Metro, represented by most of the players selected to the all-Greater Spokane League team, will be heavily favored to win. After all, the Metro is undefeated in the series.
Sports

T-Wolves rule

Don't tell Lake City track coach Kelly Reed his teams' victories in the Inland Empire League championships Friday afternoon may have been a bit hollow. It's not his fault that his team's chief competition, Lewiston, essentially bypassed the conference finals for a second consecutive year.
Sports

Reynolds a good fit

Brad Reynolds has always been a student first and an athlete second. It's the various other activities in the Post Falls High senior's life – attaining Eagle rank in Boy Scouts, the highest possible ranking, and being one of his school's top actors in drama, for example – that more truly define who he is than sports. And that's fine with him.
