LC doesn’t miss beat

The calendar says 2007, but the way the Lake City High football team played Friday it looked a lot like 2006. The defending 5A state champion Timberwolves, ranked No. 1 in the preseason poll this week, cruised past visiting Timberline of Boise 40-0 in a non-league season opener for both teams.

Hout holds the line

Talk to any high school football coach in Idaho about Byron Hout of Lake City and the same six words are usually uttered. "The best player in the state," is the similar refrain about the 6-foot-1, 225-pound senior who was a two-way starter last year at defensive end and offensive tackle.

Lake City reflects on its future

Tuesday wasn't unlike most of Lake City High's first football practices. The Timberwolves gathered for the first of two 2-hour sessions at 7 a.m. with coach Van Troxel and went through offensive and defensive drills with helmets and no pads. But the day was different in one way: The Timberwolves are coming off a State 5A championship and 12-0 season for the first time in school history.

Hoopfest delight!

The defending champs were nowhere near Nike Center Court for the 18th annual Hoopfest Men's Elite finals Sunday afternoon. That cleared the way for four teams, with distinct local flavor, to showcase their talent.

NOTEBOOK: Duo faces twilight of Hoopfest careers

Longtime friends and educators Clay Henry and Jeff Miller took to the streets Saturday morning for the 18th time at Hoopfest. They haven't missed a Hoopfest yet. But their days of playing together are numbered.

Still going strong

Spokane Valley residents Dave and Eileen Green spent their first 12 years at Hoopfest mostly as spectators, traipsing downtown sidewalks watching their two sons play. They decided two summers ago, after their youngest son, Michael, graduated from Central Valley, to team up as court monitor and scorekeeper. But they had to postpone that plan after Michael continued playing.

Ironman repeat

No wonder Ford Ironman Coeur d'Alene is Viktor Zyemtsev's favorite race. The Ukrainian resident became the first back-to-back Ford Ironman Coeur d'Alene champion Sunday in the tightest finish in the fifth annual race, as he earned $14,000 out of the $50,000 purse. Zyemtsev finished in 8 hours, 33 minutes and 32 seconds, holding off Tom Evans of Penticton, B.C., by 62 seconds.

Ironman CdA difficulty factor increased

The fifth Ford Ironman Coeur d'Alene race will feature a significant change. Call it a major face-lift. The heart of the 112-mile bike portion of the three-discipline event has been altered. No longer will participants ride through Post Falls and into Washington near Liberty Lake.

Spokane defeats Eugene

Had the Spokane Indians benefited from a little more hitting throughout their season-opening homestand, they'd probably be heading out on the road with an above .500 record. Spokane coupled clutch hitting with another solid combined pitching effort as the Indians fought back for a 6-4 win over the Eugene Emeralds in a Northwest League game Saturday before a crowd of 5,925 at Avista Stadium.

From golf course to the Ironman course

Swimming, biking and running aren't activities Troy Blood uses in his day job. In fact, water is something a golf professional wants to avoid like the plague.

LC’s Hout commits to Boise State

Byron Hout, who led the Lake City High football team to a 12-0 season and State 5A championship last fall and was later named the state's player of the year, has given Boise State University an oral commitment. Hout called BSU head coach Chris Peterson on Monday afternoon after spending the weekend at a Broncos camp.

Lovato hopes magic returns at Ironman

The first Ford Ironman Coeur d'Alene race in 2003 will always hold a special place in Michael Lovato's heart. It was his breakthrough race. His first Ironman victory came that year. Lovato hopes to rekindle some of that magic when the fifth Ford Ironman Coeur d'Alene unfolds Sunday morning.

Eugene handles Indians

It's obviously too early to panic if you're the Spokane Indians and too early to print Northwest League playoff tickets if you're the Eugene Emeralds. Still, in the get-to-know-you stage in just the second game of the short season Wednesday, Eugene spread the offense around and was efficient on the mound as the Emeralds handled the Indians 11-1 before an Avista Stadium crowd of 4,874.

Metro holds back Region

A couple of the Jack Blair Memorial Girls AAU All-Star Basketball games have had closer final margins. It's doubtful that any previous Region team had dug out of as deep a hole and still had a chance to win as it did Thursday.

Baker braces for full summer

Katie Baker is bracing for a busy, basketball-filled summer. Heck, it's been an eventful spring. The Lake City High sophomore has played about 30 games since leading the Timberwolves to the State 5A championship in mid-February. Her calendar is dotted with weeklong or weekend tournaments for the next 10 weeks.

True champions

Many things describe Jenna DeLong of Coeur d'Alene and Frank Lagrimanta of Timberlake. Champion is one word that comes to mind. Perhaps what separated them from others, though, is an uncommon work ethic. That is the foundation that allowed them to become champions in their athletic and academic pursuits.

Lakeside girls capture title with true team effort

TACOMA – After the 200-meter final Saturday afternoon, Lakeside coach Paul Huffman started pacing nervously around Mount Tahoma Stadium. Huffman's girls team didn't have a foursome in the final event, the 1,600 relay. So he got away from his team because he didn't want his Eagles to see him walking about anxiously.

Musson, Albrecht claim state titles in field events

TACOMA – David Musson of Colville and Anna Albrecht of Pullman used their arms to capture the lone state titles for Eastern Washington athletes Saturday afternoon as the State 2A track and field championships concluded at Mount Tahoma Stadium. For Albrecht, she coupled a state title in the discus with the title she defended in the shot put Friday. The satisfying thing about the discus is it was unexpected.
