Coeur d’Alene beats top-ranked Lake City

The first showdown a year ago between the crosstown rivals had a similar beginning. The Coeur d'Alene girls basketball team, in fact, took both Inland Empire League games from Lake City. But in the end, the Timberwolves won the game that mattered most when they upset the Vikings in the State 5A championship game.

Vandals watch one last game slip away

MOSCOW – Another rally. Another tantalizingly close encounter with victory. And in the end Saturday, another difficult loss for the Idaho Vandals. Utah State played a turnover-free game as the Aggies held off the Vandals 24-19 in a Western Athletic Conference season-ending football game before a holiday-light crowd of 8,102 at the Kibbie Dome.

Lakeland to drop from IEL

Fearing its athletes are overexposed to 5A teams, Lakeland High School officials announced Monday it is withdrawing from the 5A/4A combined Inland Empire League beginning next fall. At a league meeting in September, 4A Lakeland asked IEL schools to alter the conference schedule in boys and girls basketball, volleyball and boys and girls soccer. Lakeland proposed that instead of 4A schools playing 5A schools twice, the schools would play each other once while continuing to play league schools in the same classification twice. The proposal was overwhelmingly rejected 12-2 on a vote of principals and athletic directors.

Running paves way for B-E

Burlington-Edison might as well have been another name for an asphalt paving company Saturday night. Tigers can’t slow defending champs

FRUITLAND, Idaho – The way Fruitland High football coach Bruce Schlaich saw things Saturday afternoon, his undefeated defending State 3A champion Grizzlies were fortunate to fend off Timberlake. This from a coach whose team has won 20 straight games and will be heavily favored to repeat next week.
Sports

It starts with defense

A key component to the two state championships that Lake City High football teams have captured is defense. If the Timberwolves are going to add a third state title, let alone defend their 2006 5A championship, it will be because of defense.

Timberlake prevails despite late scare

SPIRIT LAKE – Nick Puckett's eyes couldn't believe what they were seeing. The Timberlake High senior running back/linebacker watched a 17-0 lead dissolve to three points before the Tigers held off the Weiser Wolverines 17-14 in a State 3A football quarterfinal Saturday afternoon at Van Tuinstra Memorial Field.

Timberwolves get defensive, reverse fortunes on Bengals

LEWISTON – Funny what a sense of urgency will do to a high school football team. Forced to make a road trip to Lewiston for the second time in two weeks, the Lake City Timberwolves bounced back from arguably their worst outing of the season to extend their season one more week.

Fall running mates

The Lakeland High football team's offense has played a game akin to musical running backs this season. Except in the Hawks' version there's no fighting over who plays or how many carries each receives.

Bulldogs can’t repeat

Sandpoint trudged through the consolation bracket all the way to the State 4A volleyball championship match Saturday evening, but the Bulldogs ran smack into a better team. So in the end, Sandpoint coach Karen Alsager wasn't dissatisfied.

St. Maries on golden path

It's been 14 years since St. Maries, a former State 3A volleyball power, captured gold. The Lumberjacks are a win away from having an opportunity to end their drought. St. Maries coach Jamie Sloper thought her team played at a level it needed to Friday to challenge for a state championship in opening-round 3A tourney play at Coeur d'Alene High School's Elmer Jordan Court.

Postseason puzzle

The topsy-turvy 5A Inland Empire League added another chapter Thursday night. Needing a victory to have a chance at a three-way tiebreaker, the Post Falls High football team played perhaps its first full game of the year as the visiting Trojans downed Coeur d'Alene 26-14.

Back in the fold

The phone call came minutes after the St. Maries High volleyball team arrived in Wendell for the 2006 State 3A tournament and checked into its motel. The call to Lumberjacks coach Jamie Sloper was from athletic director Todd Gilkey, and he wasn't checking to see how the drive was to Wendell.

Vikings blanked in semis

Mountain View goalie Brian Sturm and his defenders erected an impenetrable wall in front of the goal Friday afternoon. Try and try as Coeur d'Alene did, the Vikings couldn't crack through as defending state champ Mountain View prevailed 2-0 in a State 5A boys soccer tournament match at Lake City High School.

Balanced Vikings win regional

Now that's the level of volleyball that can do something at state. With junior setter Natalie Stewart involving as many as five teammates, Coeur d'Alene had too many weapons for Lake City to defend as the Vikings captured a second consecutive 5A Region I championship with a telling 25-15, 25-10, 25-17 win Thursday at Elmer Jordan Court.

CdA responds in second half

Jordon Eborall was so infuriated after a scoreless first half – both for himself and the Coeur d'Alene High boys soccer team – that he held his tongue during the 5-minute intermission. "I didn't talk to anybody because I needed to score," said Eborall, a sophomore forward who leads the Vikings in scoring. "I get mad when I don't do something good."

One goal in mind: no goals

The Coeur d'Alene High boys soccer team has averaged nearly four goals per match this season. The Vikings, in fact, have scored more than five times than what they've allowed. But if they capture a state championship this week, it will happen because of their defense.
