Young Stanford players sparkle

Two of the youngest players from The Farm stepped up big for the Final Four-bound Stanford women's basketball team. Sophomore guard JJ Hones thought it was her turn to play a key role. And did the Beaverton, Ore., native ever step up, scoring a career-high 23 points as the second-seeded Cardinal knocked off top-seeded Maryland 98-87 in the NCAA tournament Spokane Region final Monday before an announced crowd of 6,821 at the Arena.

For those who didn't know, there's more to the Stanford women's basketball team than John Wooden Award candidate Candice Wiggins. With their senior standout having an unusually quiet game, the Cardinal found plenty of contributions from others, especially the inside tandem of Jayne Appel and Kayla Pedersen, as Stanford pulled away from game Pittsburgh 72-53 in the late Sweet 16 matchup Saturday in the Arena.

The Lake City High boys track team has yet to capture a state trophy since the school opened in 1994. It's been 16 years since the Coeur d'Alene girls claimed a state trophy. Both the Lake City boys and Coeur d'Alene girls could break through at the State 5A meet this spring.

University of Idaho women's basketball coach Mike Divilbiss resigned Friday after seven seasons. His resignation comes a little more than a week after athletic director Rob Spear fired men's coach George Pfeifer.

Coeur d'Alene High junior Kama Griffitts has been named the All-Idaho 5A player of the year by the Idaho Statesman newspaper in Boise. The Boise newspaper selects All-Idaho teams each year based on votes of coaches statewide.

The Timberlake High boys track team has captured three 3A state titles in the last four years and four consecutive state trophies. Timberlake coach Brian Kluss expects a fifth straight state trophy. Whether it's another state championship remains to be seen.

Vandals hire longtime USU assistant

Don Verlin withdrew his name from consideration for the University of Idaho men's basketball job the last time it was open. Friday, Verlin, a longtime Utah State assistant coach, accepted an offer to become the Vandals' head coach. He replaces George Pfeifer, who was fired Tuesday after two seasons. The Vandals were 12-48 under Pfeifer, including 8-21 this season.

Search gets underway for Idaho’s next men’s basketball coach

University of Idaho athletic director Rob Spear flew to an undisclosed location Wednesday afternoon to begin interviews for the next men's basketball coach. Spear said he had four interviews lined up. He was doing his first interview Wednesday evening and expected to conclude sometime Friday. He declined to disclose names of the candidates, saying he was meeting them at a "central location."

The Post Falls High softball team came within a victory of qualifying for the State 5A tournament last year in its first year in the state's biggest classification. The four 5A Inland Empire League teams, including Post Falls, will be in the chase for two state berths this season.

Lake City’s Thacker resigns

Saying he did so with much reluctance, Jim Thacker resigned as Lake City High boys basketball coach Tuesday after three seasons. "If I would have thought about it, I probably would have resigned a couple of days (ago), on the Ides of March, because I pretty much feel like Julius Caesar a little bit," Thacker, 60, said. "I think I've done what was asked there. I've come in and I think I've elevated the program. I pretty much did what they wanted me to."

Vandals let Pfeifer go

Mac Hopson had to sit out the 2007-08 men's basketball season at the University of Idaho after transferring from Washington State. He practiced with the Vandals and watched them improve this year. So he was shocked to learn Tuesday morning that George Pfeifer was fired after two seasons.

The South boys and girls were too much for the North in the fifth annual Idaho High School All-Star Basketball games for seniors Saturday afternoon. The South girls, taking advantage of size, opened an early lead and never relented in an 80-57 victory at North Idaho College's Rolly Williams Court.

Lake City hopes to repeat state title

The Lake City High baseball team wasn't the best 5A team in the state from start to finish last year. Start is the operative word here. When it counted the most, though, the Timberwolves concluded as the best team. Lake City won its final 13 games, including a telling 7-1 victory over Lewiston in an all-Inland Empire League state championship showdown.

Aggies provide a major obstacle for Vandals

On a number of levels, Idaho men's basketball coach George Pfeifer is tickled that his team garnered the sixth seed in the Western Athletic Conference tournament. At times the Vandals have been competitive with every WAC team this season. What makes Idaho's quarterfinal matchup tonight difficult isn't so much that it is against the third seed. It's the fact that the Vandals face defending tourney champ New Mexico State on its home court – the site of Idaho's worst conference defeat.

MOSCOW, Idaho – As it turned out, the Utah State Aggies had more to play for Saturday than the Idaho Vandals. Utah State captured the No. 1 seed in the Western Athletic Conference tournament with a telling 78-58 victory before a crowd of 1,383 at the Cowan Spectrum in the regular-season finale.

Coeur d'Alene High boys basketball coach Kent Leiss would have lost a bet predicting how his team would fare this year. He just wanted his team to qualify for state. To play for a state championship was beyond his wildest imagination before the season started.

MOSCOW, Idaho – Whether at play or at work, Michael Crowell goes by his own beat. The 6-foot-7 Idaho senior forward wants to pursue a business he started with his younger brother, Demetrius. Using computer software for mixing and creating beats, they produce music of all varieties. They have a MySpace page to promote their venture.

NAMPA, Idaho – That sound heard in the third quarter wasn't the Idaho Center roof collapsing. Truth be told, it was the sound of the afterburners from the Vallivue Falcons going on a 13-0 run that provided more than enough separation from Coeur d'Alene.
