Season to run

The Post Falls High cross country team hopes to compete with 5A neighbors and regional powers Lake City and Coeur d’Alene some day. Lakeland has yet to have a boy or girl place in the top 20 at state since the school moved to 4A in 2004.

Tigers chomp T-Wolves

It’s hard to imagine the Lewis and Clark football team better last year than it was Friday. The defending Washington state 4A champion Tigers picked up where they left off, steamrolling the Lake City Timberwolves 39-0 before an estimated crowd of 1,800 at Lake City.

Expect competitive 5A race

It’s been too long since we last chatted. I began my 25th year at The S-R last week, and that time, too, has gone by way too fast. Two of my three children are in college now, and my youngest is a sophomore in high school. You didn’t pay 50 cents to read about my family, though. In the few lines I have in this space, I want to offer my football predictions.

Football season kicks off

The Coeur d’Alene High football team will be out to prove that last year was a hiccup. Lake City, the Inland Empire League’s dominant team this decade, will be seeking to qualify for the state playoffs for a 12th consecutive year.

Lake City holds off Sandpoint

The Lake City and Sandpoint football teams combined to make enough season-opening mistakes to fill a game’s worth of video. Even umpire Bob Ruiz got in on the act, lining up once in Lake City’s backfield instead of parallel with the linebackers behind the defensive line.

School starts, so does football

The Post Falls High football team improved last year. Lakeland, meanwhile, qualified for the State 4A playoffs for the first time since moving into the classification in 2004.

Are you ready for some soccer?

There’s plenty to like about Inland Empire League soccer. Sandpoint’s girls and boys seemingly are in the mix for state titles every year, and Coeur d’Alene’s girls and boys have had plenty of state success the past two years.

Area schools gearing up for new soccer season

Post Falls High School started fielding boys and girls soccer teams in 1996-97. They have yet to qualify for state. But the Trojans boys and girls are closing the gap on the area powers. The teams should continue to make measurable strides this fall.

Jones makes most of chance with Vandals

MOSCOW, Idaho – Count junior college walk-on safety Jeromy Jones among the pleasant surprises for the University of Idaho football team. With starting safety and defensive captain Shiloh Keo sitting out the Vandals’ final scrimmage with assorted dings and bruises, Jones took advantage of his opportunity.

Real love of the game

Carlena Shove already knows what the number of her husband’s softball uniform will be next year. She just adds another digit with every birthday. The number on Donald’s uniform next year will be 73.

Idaho patches up line quickly

MOSCOW, Idaho – Offensive line was considered a deep position for the University of Idaho football team last spring. But the loss of two starters – one during spring ball and the other Saturday – has put Idaho in an unexpected position.

Akey’s warm greeting

MOSCOW, Idaho – The calendar must know football season is around the corner because the temperature shot up measurably Tuesday afternoon for the University of Idaho’s opening practice. The forecast is for even warmer weather through the week, and that put a smile on the face of second-year Vandals coach Robb Akey.

Rook lands job with CdA

It’s the job Nick Rook has wanted since he graduated from Coeur d’Alene High School. Rook, 29, has been named head baseball coach at his alma mater. He replaces Chris Stangel, whose contract wasn’t renewed after two turmoil-filled seasons. The Vikings were a combined 24-26 the past two years.

B.C. sweep in Ironman CdA

A dentist and a rookie swept the sixth annual Ford Ironman Coeur d'Alene championships Sunday. It was a British Columbia sweep, too.

Former champs favored

Two former champions, including the two-time defending men's professional champ, are heavily favored to capture championships Sunday at the sixth annual Ford Ironman Coeur d'Alene. Viktor Zyemtsev, a Ukrainian resident, is seeking a third consecutive win at Coeur d'Alene. No wonder it's his favorite race. He became the first back-to-back champ last year, holding off Tom Evans of Penticton, British Columbia, by 52 seconds in the tightest finish in the brief history of the race. Zyemtsev finished in 8 hours, 33 minutes and 32 seconds.

Bridges ends successful run as Lake City baseball coach

Cory Bridges didn't try to keep it a secret. But the Lake City High baseball coach didn't try to draw attention to it during the season either. As expected, Bridges, 49, handed in his resignation Tuesday. He started the LC program and endured some lean early years.

On track to success

This is a first. The Spokesman- Review's Idaho Male and Female Athletes of the Year are from the Intermountain League. That's not to say there weren't any worthy candidates from the other classifications. But Nick Puckett of Timberlake and Lacy Hopkins of Priest River, both seniors, were at the head of the class in 2007-08.

Lake City boys 2 points short of title

BOISE – The Lake City High boys track team will wonder what could have been for some time to come. More specifically, senior long-distance ace John Coyle will wonder what happened as the 5A portion of the state meet wrapped up Friday night at Boise State University's Bronco Stadium.
