New events, same results for Hewitt

BOISE – About halfway through the season, Clark Fork junior Bailey Hewitt decided to dabble in the long and triple jumps. She hadn't done the long jump since junior high and had never attempted the triple jump. Why would the defending State 1A 100- and 300-meter hurdles champion try events that could interfere with her hope of pulling off hurdles repeats?

Leonard caps a high-caliber week

BOISE – To say it's been a good week for Lakeland senior Kristine Leonard would be a gross understatement. Leonard captured the 4A Region I shot put and discus titles with school-record breaking throws last weekend.

Tigers on prowl again at state track

It's a traditional routine for Timberlake track coach Brian Kluss. As soon as the state activities association posts the event-by-event seedings for the state track meets Sunday afternoon on its Web site, Kluss downloads the 3A boys events and does the math.

LC can’t rally to repeat

BOISE – This time, the Lake City High baseball team couldn't muster a final rally. The Timberwolves needed a rally a year ago to put themselves in position to win the State 5A championship. They needed one Saturday, but Boise's pitchers shut down the Timberwolves as the Braves knocked off the defending champs 6-4 at Borah High School's Wigle Field.

T-Wolves charge into state title game

BOISE – It was the kind of offensive outburst Lake City High baseball coach Cory Bridges has been waiting for all season. Twelve Timberwolves came to the plate in the second inning and nine runs later Lake City was on its way to a 14-4 run-rule shortened victory over Timberline in five innings Friday evening in a State 5A tournament semifinal at Borah High School's Wigle Field.

Clanton’s four-hitter guides LC in opener

BOISE – Is swagger something that can be turned on as if flicking a switch? Especially if it's been dormant for a year? Lake City baseball coach Cory Bridges intended to find out Thursday afternoon. He asked his State 5A defending champion Timberwolves to find their internal confidence buttons, and they responded.

A Work in progress

Lela Work has an apt last name. It defines what has taken the Lake City High softball pitcher from a thrower with potential a year ago to one who has dominated opponents this season.

Lake City takes advantage to win

Give a team at any level extra outs – especially the Idaho defending 5A state champion baseball team – and it's the closest thing to digging a grave. Lake City scored six runs in the second inning – all unearned and all coming with two outs – as the Timberwolves buried the Post Falls Trojans 10-5 in a Region I winner-to-state, loser-out game Friday afternoon.

Puckett and Hopkins sizzle at track meet

They should have refunded admission to the couple of handfuls of daring fans who paid to attend the District I Meet of Champions and sent the track and field participants home. That is, until about halfway through when the near-30 mph headwinds subsided, allowing the final half of the running events to be competed in relative calm compared to the first three hours of the frigid meet Thursday afternoon at Post Falls High School.

T-Wolves beat Trojans to continue rallying ways

Winning games late or in clutch situations isn't anything new to the Lake City High baseball team. Sure, the Timberwolves won their final 13 on the way to the State 5A championship last year.

Ex-Little Leaguers seek repeat as Idaho 5A champs

Lifelong friendships, it's been said, are forged long before high school. If that's true, the bond created among Coeur d'Alene's 12 "Boys of Summer" in 2002 will truly last a lifetime. Eleven 12 year olds and one 11 year old were selected to the Coeur d'Alene All-Star Little League team six summers ago, and they came together for a magical run that ended in the Northwest Regional championship game in San Bernardino, Calif.

Defense, pitching carry T-Wolves

Lake City baseball coach Cory Bridges always stresses that defense and pitching will keep a team in a ballgame. Defense and pitching were the difference Friday – particularly the defense of platoon right fielder Michael Korczyk and the pitching of seldom-used sophomore Scott Siebert.

Up for the challenge

The Coeur d'Alene High boys golf team finished a distant second to Twin Falls in the State 5A tournament last year at Lewiston. Both teams returned four of their top five golfers this year. So Coeur d'Alene believes it can challenge for the state title.

Vikings girls dash to title

It's been 17 years since a Coeur d'Alene High girls track team won a regional championship. Judging by the Vikings' showing in the Inland Empire League championship meet Thursday, the drought should end in two weeks.

Lewiston locks up No. 1 seed to 5A baseball tournament

The Lewiston High baseball team needed just a split Saturday afternoon to secure the No. 1 seed in the 5A Region I tournament. So from that standpoint, Bengals coach Tom Grunenfelder was satisfied that his team bounced back from its first loss of the season, 4-0, in the opener at defending state champ Lake City to get a 2-1 victory in the second game under sun-splashed skies.

John Coyle’s leadership, determination run deep

There's John Coyle the author. There's the John Coyle line of furniture. There's John Coyle the Wall Street financier. There's John Coyle the artist. There's John Coyle the boxing referee. There's John Coyle the urologist. And there's the John Coyle Equation, a band.

Setting her goals high

Challenging for school records in the shot put and discus a year ago wasn't in the realm of possibility for Kristine Leonard. She made measurable strides during the season, but the Lakeland High thrower finished the year well short of the school records even though she took third in the State 4A meet in both events.

Idaho QBs, defense impress in finale

MOSCOW, Idaho – University of Idaho football coach Robb Akey plans to take a few days to evaluate the Vandals' spring season before officially naming a starting quarterback. Judging how returning starter Nathan Enderle played in the annual Silver and Gold game Friday, though, it would be highly doubtful if the sophomore incumbent doesn't return in the fall where he left off in 2007.

Soccer player returning to her roots

Carmen Reyes always thought the sport of soccer could open doors that she might not otherwise have an opportunity to walk through. She'll find out how true that is this summer when the sport takes the Coeur d'Alene High graduate to her paternal roots. Her father's grandparents were born in Puerto Rico, and that heritage will allow Carmen Reyes to play for Puerto Rico's first Women's Premier Soccer League team.

Combos hit right notes

The senior Combo twins were, well, quite the combo Thursday afternoon. Nick Combo took care of things on the mound and Chris Combo broke through at the plate and made a pair of nice backpedaling catches from his defensive spot at second base as they led defending 5A state champ Lake City to an 8-1 win over Coeur d'Alene in an Inland Empire League baseball game at CdA.

Vandals warm up chilly day with sizzling offense

MOSCOW, Idaho – These are times the University of Idaho football team is thankful to have an indoor stadium. Judging by how hot the offense was Saturday morning, though, it wouldn't have taken long for the overnight snow to melt on the outdoor practice field.
