Sandpoint qualifies for State 5A for first time

It's always been suspected that the Sandpoint High girls soccer team, winners of four State 4A titles since the Idaho High School Activities Association began overseeing the sport seven years ago, would more than hold its own if it were in the 5A classification. Sandpoint will get the opportunity to find out next week after the No. 3-seeded Bulldogs used an own goal to stop No. 2 Lake City 1-0 in a 5A Region I tournament winner-to-state, loser-out semifinal Thursday at LC.

Panhandle Picks with Greg Lee

So much for the so-called expert. The Scribe had his worst week this season. The only nugget of good news is I had company. My guest, Coeur d'Alene Charter boys basketball coach Brian Childs, matched my ineptitude.

Vikings pick up state bid

Coeur d'Alene High senior forward Jordan Correia had a hat trick earlier in the season, but Vikings boys soccer coach Eric Louis called Correia's no-goal game Wednesday his best of the year. "His work rate was outstanding," Louis said. "Production and work rate are two different issues. He didn't score, but he's big and strong and physical and he pesters them. He plays it off and they don't get a chance to hit him or anything. He's crafty like that. He's a good goal scorer, but he's been playing pretty team oriented."

Trojans fall short

Saturday's Post Falls-Ontario high school football game was chock-full of so much scoring that many of the fans may need treatment for sprained necks. The teams combined for 14 touchdowns and 880 yards of total offense before the visiting Tigers of Oregon prevailed 56-42 in a game that had the wild appeal of arena football.

Bears shock LC

Ever since playing against the Lake City Timberwolves at summer camp, Central Valley utility senior Connor Janhunen knew the Bears had a chance against the defending 5A state champions from Coeur d'Alene. Janhunen played out the game Friday just as he dreamed about it four months ago. He kicked what would prove to be the game-winning field goal and intercepted a pass shortly thereafter as visiting Central Valley upset No. 1-ranked Lake City 27-26, spoiling the Timberwolves' homecoming and snapping a 17-game winning streak in a non-league game.

Lake City earns No. 2 seed

A tie wasn't going to hurt the Lake City High girls soccer team Thursday in its quest to secure the best seeding available for the regional tournament. But LC coach Matt Ruchti reminded his team during halftime of a scoreless tie with Inland Empire League champ Coeur d'Alene what a victory meant.

Caught up in offense

Levi Buckles has a lot of reasons to brag. Just don't waste your time waiting around to hear the Post Falls High standout wide receiver talk about himself. He would much rather let his play speak for himself.

Panhandle Picks with Greg Lee

I haven't posted wins for 17 straight weeks like a local football team, but I'm beginning to like this season. The record speaks for itself. I topped Laura Tolzmann, Lake City's head softball coach, last week. I picked six of eight games, edging Tolzmann by one. That puts the season scoreboard at: Lee 38-10 (.792), Guests 34-14 (.708).

Timberwolves prevail over city rivals

For two quarters on Friday, defending 5A state football champion Lake City had its hands full with rival Coeur d'Alene High. In the end, though, the top-ranked Timberwolves had too much offense and defense for the visiting Vikings. Lake City scored two touchdowns in the third quarter as the T-Wolves pulled away, 39-13, in the Inland Empire League 5A opener for both teams.

T-Wolves top Viks

Take the top offensive weapon out of the starting lineup of the No. 1-ranked football team in the state and what is left? Plenty, as the Lake City Timberwolves showed Friday.

Vikings face tall order

Lake City High football coach Van Troxel isn't trying to deceive his football team this week. He knows and his team knows that the Timberwolves are better than Coeur d'Alene. But that doesn't mean they automatically have a win locked up before playing today. The Vikings (2-3) visit the No. 1-ranked and defending state champion T-Wolves (4-0) at 7 p.m.

Kremer’s four goals lift LC

It's one thing to defend the home turf in soccer. It's another thing entirely different to defend the football field in soccer. Winless in two previous soccer matches played under the lights on the Lake City High football field, the Lake City girls finally broke through Tuesday.

LC gets job done early

SANDPOINT – The Lake City High football team ended a trend Friday. Not the winning kind, mind you.

Sandpoint an up and running team

Three years ago, the Sandpoint High girls cross country program was barely on the 4A state map. The Bulldogs finished dead last, 13th out of 13 teams. Two years ago, they jumped to third. Then last year, after finishing 91 points behind state power Bishop Kelly the year before, Sandpoint took second, just 12 out of first.

Post Falls motivated

The Post Falls High football team didn't play a lick of defense in the first half Friday. If the Trojans broke a sweat in the first two quarters, it surely was from chasing the Caldwell Cougars, not stopping them.

Titans state case

The University High football team began with a statement-making drive and ended with one that could go far in defining the Titans' season. And 6-foot-4 senior Trevor Wakem was on the receiving end of both touchdown passes from senior Danny Jordan, the final one, coming on a 9-yard out, securing a 20-14 win over visiting Coeur d'Alene in a non-league game Thursday.

Puckett, Powers add up to success

SPIRIT LAKE, Idaho – Ask Timberlake High offensive coordinator and math teacher Brian Kluss what P{+2} equals and he has a quick answer that is more statistical than mathematical. Seniors Nick Puckett and Levi Powers, the P elements in the equation, have combined for 5,602 yards total offense in two years in the Tigers' yard-mulching backfield.
