Lawrence Rolls Over National Opposition At Reno Tourney

Jared Lawrence didn't need any luck to win at Reno. By capturing an individual title at the Nevada event that bills itself as the nation's toughest, Lawrence cleared the biggest hurdle toward an undefeated career. He dominated the 130-pound division last weekend. The only points Lawrence has allowed this season have come when he's cut opponents loose so he could score more points.

Boys basketball If the new year brings more of what Lake City High boys basketball coach Jim Winger witnessed Saturday night, he'll be satisfied. Winger's Timberwolves, having struggled during their first seven games, opened 1998 with a sterling 68-45 victory over Post Falls in a Border League game Saturday at Lake City.

Scott Miller arrived at the Tri-State high school wrestling tournament Friday afternoon - as he has every year since 1977 - but his heart was still in North Carolina. Miller is the head coach at Campbell University, where the first of three college wrestlers died in early November while cutting weight for a season-opening tournament.

La Grande Favorite For Tri-State Tourney

Tri-State wrestling tournament director Bill Pecha initially thought as many as six teams would tangle for the team championship when the annual tourney is held this weekend. Until Wednesday. That's when Pecha took a closer look at the La Grande (Ore.) lineup. "That's my pick," Pecha said as he shuffled through the 32-man brackets for each weight. "They're not going to put any weak people out there. They'll get the advancement points. And they've got three or four potential champs."

Lc Has No Answer For Boise Rallies Early And Late Lead Braves To 73-50 Win

Boise used its full-court pressure and athleticism for big runs early and late as the Braves spanked Lake City 73-50 in a non-league basketball game at LC on Saturday. The Braves (2-0) opened a 24-8 lead in the first quarter. After LC rallied to within 40-39 midway in the third period, Boise again got untracked, outscoring the Timberwolves 33-11 over the final 11:44.

Haynes Continues Tradition

Don Haynes' high school basketball teams won more than 500 games and four state titles in a quarter-century of coaching. The second generation began Tuesday. Haynes' youngest son, Tyler, made a successful head coaching debut at Sandpoint when the Bulldogs downed Bonners Ferry 64-51. Son only needs 509 more victories to catch father. About 33 years ago at Kellogg, Don Haynes launched his career. He didn't have to wait long to coach a state championship team as the Wildcats captured a title his first season (1963-64).
