Gonzaga women ready for first WCC home game

Gonzaga women’s basketball coach Kelly Graves briefly entertained the idea of playing one-on-one against San Francisco coach Jennifer Azzi – a class of 2009 Hall of Famer. “She would probably kick my butt,” he joked via telephone while on a recruiting trip in Seattle on Tuesday.

Spokane Chiefs coach nears 500 victories

When asked how he feels about being on the brink of a major milestone, Don Nachbaur just grinned and shook his head a little. The Spokane Chiefs coach is one win away from 500 career Western Hockey League wins – a feat only five other coaches have achieved, including current Saskatoon coach Lorne Molleken and Vancouver coach Don Hay, who made the list last season.

Chiefs bag Moose Jaw at home

It didn’t take long to get the message. Despite being in the middle of a stretch of four games in five nights – four of which are on the road – the Spokane Chiefs looked anything but tired on Friday night when they played their first game at the Arena since mid-December.

Chiefs look to end two-game skid tonight against Moose Jaw

Don Nachbaur has his own way of pointing out that you reap what you sow. “Since the (Christmas) break we have played two really good games and two mediocre games,” the Spokane Chiefs’ head coach said. “It comes down to consistency. The last two games we played, we didn’t compete hard enough to win – so in essence, we got exactly what we deserved.”

West Valley dispatches EV (Yakima)

Perhaps coming off an overtime victory over rival Cheney was enough of a close call for the West Valley Eagles. On Tuesday night it seemed they were primed and ready to run away with a victory as Terrynce Duke scored three touchdowns and West Valley shook off a slow start, hammering East Valley (Yakima) with a 35-7 win in a State 2A football play-in game.

Dogged effort

The stakes were high Friday night for the Gonzaga Prep Bullpups and the Central Valley Bears. For the Bullpups, the football game was a must-win in terms of staying in the playoff picture. For the Bears, the game was an opportunity to remain unbeaten in league play and lock up the top seed when the postseason rolls around.

One for all the marbles

Three things are certain in life – death and taxes being the first two. In the case of which of the past two Memorial Cup champions will continue their Western Hockey League playoff quest, a verdict is also guaranteed. And the decision is quickly approaching.

Giants edge Chiefs to force Game 7 in Vancouver

If you think about it, the Spokane Chiefs and Vancouver Giants have already played a seventh game in their Western Conference semifinal series. Their quadruple-overtime marathon Friday night in Vancouver, British Columbia, went more than twice the length of a regulation game before Blake Gal scored the game-winning goal to give Spokane the win and put the Chiefs in position to close out the series Sunday night at home.

Chiefs got best of classic

Of course it ended like it did. This is playoff hockey, folks. What did you expect – Drayson Bowman from the right circle? Well, that happened, too. Technically, it was the reason that everything else happened.

Chiefs were fit to be tied

The Spokane Chiefs knew they had two important opportunities on Tuesday and Wednesday night. As it turned out, they had no problem seizing both of them. After dropping the first two games of their Western Conference semifinal series with the Vancouver Giants on the road, the defending Western Hockey League and Memorial Cup champion Chiefs pulled even in the series with two victories on home ice earlier this week. In doing so, they earned another important opportunity.

Tokarski stops ’em all

As time wound down in the third period Wednesday night, Dustin Tokarski’s workload only increased. The Spokane Chiefs goalie, trying to protect a one-goal lead with 5 minutes remaining in the game, faced a Vancouver Giants onslaught as the defending Western Hockey League and Memorial Cup champion Chiefs found themselves on the penalty kill for the first time in the game.

Chiefs get back into series

The replay on the jumbo screen showed Drayson Bowman flashing a huge grin in teammate Ondrej Roman’s direction. Bowman’s not one to typically wear his heart on his sleeve, but after the clutch goal he scored Tuesday night, he just couldn’t help himself.

Chiefs need to get started

History suggests that in order for the Spokane Chiefs to have improved odds of extending their Western Hockey League playoff run, they’ll need a victory tonight. The best-of-7 Western Conference semifinal series between the defending WHL and Memorial Cup champion Chiefs (4-3) and the top-seeded Vancouver Giants (6-0) – who won the Memorial Cup in 2007 – moves to the Spokane Arena tonight for the third game of the series.

Underdog Chiefs face Giant of a challenge

Spokane coach Hardy Sauter had no problem calling his Chiefs the underdogs, because technically they are. When it comes to playing against this year’s Vancouver Giants, most teams would be considered underdogs.

It was in the second round of the Western Hockey League playoffs last season that the kings surrendered their crowns. At the time the kings – the Vancouver Giants – were seeded second in the Western Conference as the B.C. Division champions and were also the defending Memorial Cup champions after hosting and winning the tournament in 2007.

Bush family ends long run

The Bush family first made a splash on the local volleyball scene 12 years ago. That’s when the eldest of three sisters – Shayla Bush – began competing in the Pacific Northwest Qualifier. That was in 1997, and since then at least one of the sisters – Shayla, Ivy and Oceana – has competed in the annual tournament each year.

Chiefs back in sync for postseason

Following the Spokane Chiefs’ road victory Wednesday night over the Seattle Thunderbirds, goalie Dustin Tokarski said what fans on this side of the state have wanted to hear. “It does feel the same (as last year), because last year in the playoffs we were able to win on the road,” Tokarski told reporters in an interview at the ShoWare Center in Kent. “We showed that we can do it again when we are playing our ‘A’ game by taking two games here in Kent.

Bowman reaches goals

Generally speaking, goals are tough to come by when it comes to playoff hockey – just ask Drayson Bowman. “That’s the playoffs for you,” Bowman offered with a smile. “You just don’t usually see a lot of goals scored.”
