Eighth charm again

Manager Tim Hulett suggested it himself: if only the Indians could start every game under the lights. For the third night in a row, the Spokane Indians rallied in the eighth inning and overcame a deficit en route to victory – this time a 5-4 win over the Vancouver Canadians in front of 3,653 fans in Northwest League play on Monday night at Avista Stadium.

Women’s title game friendly

If you didn't know any better, Shannon Mathews comment to Rae Jewell before their final Hoopfest game of the weekend might have seemed unsportsmanlike. "Traitor," Mathews said, pointing to Jewell.

NOTEBOOK: Duo faces twilight of Hoopfest careers

Longtime friends and educators Clay Henry and Jeff Miller took to the streets Saturday morning for the 18th time at Hoopfest. They haven't missed a Hoopfest yet. But their days of playing together are numbered.

Another critical game

They are ranked eighth and ninth in the coaches' poll and are first and second in the American Conference's Western Division. All that separates the Spokane Shock from the Central Valley Coyotes is half a game, and a win would all but clinch the division for Spokane.

Shock take next big step

The idea two weeks ago was that the Spokane Shock's game with the Tri-Cities Fever was the most important matchup of the season. The Shock lost 39-34 and saw their division lead shrink to one-half game over the Fever.

Shock burn Boise

Just call it the Raul Vijil show. Or the Nygel Rogers, Rob Keefe and Alex Teems show.

Defense hurts Indians again in loss

Another costly error, another loss for the Spokane Indians. The Eugene Emeralds (3-1) scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning and added two more in the top of the 10th to hold on for a 5-3 victory over the Indians (1-3) Friday night in Northwest League baseball action in front of a sold-out crowd of 7,053 fans at Avista Stadium.

Things may heat up for Shock

It's no secret that there's no love lost between the Boise Burn and the Spokane Shock. Tonight's Western division matchup between the Shock (7-4) and the Burn (4-6) will undoubtedly be an intense battle between two teams vying for a playoff spot.

Hines retains QB job

Was this all much ado about nothing? Kind of – but the end result was exactly what Spokane Shock coach Adam Shackleford was looking for.

Osuna shines in Indians’ first win

When Renny Osuna stepped up to the plate for his first at-bat on Thursday night, he wasn't thinking of the personal milestone that would ensue. The Spokane Indians first baseman was simply hoping to reach the base he covers on defense.

Opener goes astray

As far as first impressions go, this probably wasn't what the 2007 Spokane Indians had in mind – especially Fabio Castillo. Maybe it was opening-day nerves, maybe it was a strange two-run play that gave the Eugene Emeralds a significant lead early in the game. Either way, it wasn't what the sold-out crowd of 7,067 hoped to see.

Optimistic Indians ready to play ball

The scenario was common: batter pops a deep fly into center field where the ball is chased down and caught at the warning track nearly 395 yards away. Tim Hulett's response was the gem.

Shock have no remedy for Fever

KENNEWICK – The defending ArenaCup champion Spokane Shock trotted onto the field amidst a clash of cheers and jeers. After all, this wasn't their turf – and the Tri-Cities Fever crowd wanted to make sure the visiting Shock and their fans knew so.

New rivalry is born

It's a rivalry in the making. The Eastern Washington enmity that has developed over the years in junior hockey, minor league baseball and high school sports between Spokane and the Tri-Cities is about to expand.

Frederick’s play inspires Savage

Antwone Savage knows he is Arena Football League material, even if the Dallas Desperados missed their opportunity when they cut the Spokane Shock's veteran receiver earlier this year. While Savage continues to put in his time in the af2 and lead Shock receivers, former teammate Charles "ET" Frederick is lighting it up in the AFL with the playoff-bound Kansas City Brigade.

RiverHawks bust out

The Spokane RiverHawks picked up right where they left off at the end of last season. The defending regular-season West Coast Collegiate League champions led early and never trailed, defeating the visiting Kelowna Falcons 11-4 in the season opener for both teams at Gonzaga University's Patterson Baseball Complex.

Volunteer verdict is positive

Milt Rowland has observed many different things over his 16 years as a Hoopfest volunteer. Three years ago, Rowland recalls, the sky opened up and poured rain on the 50,000-plus players, spectators and volunteers that flood downtown Spokane every last weekend in June.

Shock look to avenge loss to Bakersfield

Riding a three-game winning streak, the Spokane Shock have one thing on their mind this week: Keep it going, and maybe get a little revenge while they are at it. The Shock (6-3) have picked up momentum over the past two weeks, securing the 66-63 win two weeks ago when they hosted Central Valley on a last-second touchdown from Kelvin Dickens, and relying on the defense last week to hold on and defeat visiting Everett 52-47 and gain sole possession of first place in the Western Division standings.
Sports

Hines plays catch-up

As Andrico Hines will tell you, hindsight is 20/20. Maybe the Spokane Shock starting quarterback should have forgone his senior season at Middle Tennessee State and opted for the surgery on his torn patella tendon. His doctor gave him two choices: fix the right kneecap and miss his senior season, or play and miss his pro workout.

Indians like Texas’ draft style

From a historical perspective, the top pick for the Texas Rangers in this year's Major League Baseball first-year player draft looks to be a promising one for the Spokane Indians. The Rangers selected Blake Beavan as their top selection and 17th overall, and Michael Main as the 24th pick in the first round of Thursday's draft, which was televised for the first time on ESPN2.

New-look Indians

Yeah, it's that time again. Time for the boys of summer, who will soon arrive to Spokane mostly fresh out of college, to take the field at Avista Stadium – a perennial occurrence since the stadium was first built in 1958.

Shock defense secures win

It was third down on the final scoring drive of the game for Spokane when Spokane Shock coach Adam Shackleford got a tap on the shoulder and received some untimely news – his kicker, John Koker, had suffered a concussion during the game-saving tackle he had made minutes before. With time running down on the clock and the Shock holding onto a five-point lead, Shackleford turned to the Shock's resilient defense to make one final stop.
Sports

Shock keep guard up

The numbers tell one story: 2-6, the record of the Everett Hawks, versus 5-3, the record of the Spokane Shock. The standings support the case: The Shock are tied for first in the Western Division, while the Hawks are in sole possession of last place.

Shock’s special Teems

It's difficult to place Alex Teems into a category and it's safe to say he has some unfinished business. The former Washington State University cornerback hasn't risen to what he considers the ultimate height of success like some ex-Cougars, but he hasn't fallen flat on his face, either. He's the guy in the middle, whose dream hasn't yet been realized – or crushed – because he's still out there chasing it. "I'm not a complacent type of guy," Teems said. "I would like to be at the highest level I could possibly be at."
