Eastern faces tough test in Towson’s West

Eastern, meet West. Three days ago, Towson coach Rob Ambrose was asked why Tigers running back Terrance West should win the Walter Payton Award, the top individual honor in the Football Championship Subdivision. Ambrose paused, then pounced. “You mean this is an actual question, that there’s somebody out there who doesn’t think he should win?” Ambrose shot back Monday morning during the Colonial Athletic Association’s weekly media teleconference.

Cougars begin search for coach

Washington State will “commence immediately” with a national search to replace women’s soccer coach Keidane McAlpine, Cougars athletic director Bill Moos said Tuesday. McAlpine, who led WSU to two NCAA tournament appearances in as many seasons as head coach, was lured away Monday by Pac-12 rival Southern California.

Eagles focus on taking care of ball vs. Towson

The Eastern Washington offensive players and coaches saw nothing but opportunity Tuesday afternoon. Some talked about “taking a trip to Texas” next month, but mostly the Eagles talked about taking care of the ball and the Towson defense in Saturday’s FCS semifinal game at Roos Field.

Tragedy hits Eagles’ Brown

On a night when their names were up in lights, Eastern Washington football players Vernon Adams and Cooper Kupp willingly retreated to the shadows to help a friend. Kupp already had been named the FCS freshman of the year on Monday morning, and Adams was awaiting the results of the Walter Payton Award when tragedy struck.

Do that, and the rest will take care of itself.

Eastern’s Cooper Kupp top freshman in FCS

Perhaps Cooper Kupp was just making up for lost time. After going almost two years without playing a game, the Eastern Washington wide receiver burst onto the scene this year with a performance that almost guaranteed the inevitable Monday night: Kupp was named the top freshman in the Football Championship Subdivision by the most lopsided vote in the three-year history of the Jerry Rice Award.

Towson coming for more than a trip

Make no mistake: The Towson Tigers aren’t just “happy to be here.” Moments after a 49-39 upset of second-ranked Eastern Illinois in an FCS quarterfinal football game, Towson coach Rob Ambrose said his team was “happy, but it wasn’t like we won the Super Bowl.”

Eagles Adams, Kupp up for national awards tonight

Winning is its own reward, but Eastern quarterback Vernon Adams and receiver Cooper Kupp have a chance for a little more tonight. Adams is one of three finalists for the Walter Payton Award – the Football Championship Subdivision equivalent of the Heisman Trophy – while Kupp is in the running for the Jerry Rice Award given to the top freshman in FCS.

Eastern Washington still can’t solve UC Irvine

Eastern Washington faced a tall order Sunday afternoon against UC Irvine, and the Eagles made it halfway up the mountain. However, second-half slumps from the field and at the free-throw line cost the Eagles dearly in a 70-61 nonconference home basketball loss against UC Irvine at Reese Court.

EWU duo kept win out of JSU’s grasp

In a game that often is all about momentum, Eastern Washington went out and seized it Saturday afternoon. That, plus some senior leadership, is a big reason the Eagles are cruising into their third FCS semifinal appearance in four years.

EWU moves on to FCS semifinals

On a day when it couldn’t take care of the football, Eastern Washington still managed to take care of business Saturday. In December, that might just be more important that lighting up the scoreboard.

Protecting Adams lines up as EWU’s top job

Vernon Adams is making history this season, but so is Jacksonville (Ala.) State. They’ll be on a collision course today in an FCS quarterfinal game at Roos Field, as the Eastern Washington quarterback tries to break some more records while the Gamecocks try to break him in two.

Anteaters will allow Eagles to judge progress

As measuring sticks go, it’s hard to beat Sunday’s Eastern Washington men’s basketball game against UC Irvine. The Eagles get a rare chance to face the same nonconference opponent in the same season, one that beat them by 23 points three weeks ago.
