South Dakota State RB Zach Zenner stocked with talent, on field and in classroom

On and off the football field, ZZ tops the charts. That would be South Dakota State running back Zach Zenner, the leading rusher in the Football Championship Subdivision – and a future doctor. As much as Zenner appreciates the blockers up front, he’s even more grateful for coach John Stiegelmeier running interference off the field.

Jackrabbits, Eagles accustomed to cold

Always his own worst critic, Eastern Washington quarterback Vernon Adams regrets every turnover. Even on a day when he was named one of three finalists for the Walter Payton Award, Adams shivered Tuesday afternoon at the thought of his 12 interceptions and a handful of fumbles this season.

‘Overachiever’ Bosch still in work mode

SEATTLE – Moments after an emotional loss in the Apple Cup, Washington State center Elliott Bosch was talking about going back to Pullman and “making some corrections.” Not the words of a senior who’s ready to call it quits after the Cougars’ 27-17 loss Friday afternoon.

Sankey adds his name to UW record book

SEATTLE – As he burst into the end zone with a go-ahead touchdown in the third quarter of Saturday’s Apple Cup, Bishop Sankey also walked into the record book. Against some tough odds, EWU’s Anthony Larry has found a solid path

When Anthony Larry first held his baby son in the spring of 2012, he promised never to let go. Not the way his own father did 20 years earlier. “I was just so happy to be a father,” said Larry, who plays football at Eastern Washington University. “I didn’t want my son to grow up not knowing who I was, so I spent more and more time with him.”

EWU’s Beau Baldwin named Big Sky coach of year

Unburdened by high expectations for his Eastern Washington football team this year, head coach Beau Baldwin and his staff went out and exceeded them. From the shocking win in the opener at Oregon State to the exhilarating comeback last weekend against Portland State, the Eagles shrugged off the good, the bad and the indifferent on the way to the school’s first undisputed Big Sky Conference title in 16 years.

For Eastern Washington football players Ronald Baines, Anthony Larry and T.J. Lee III, the first bonds of friendship were forged in study hall. That’s where the the former Prop 48 non-qualifiers first found their academic footing and learned to put the phrase “student-athlete” in the proper order.

Sunday morning’s gathering lacked the drama of the night before, and that was just fine with the Eastern Washington football players, coaches and fans.
