Special teams aim to shine at Eastern

It was a special day Wednesday on the football fields at Eastern Washington. It began with punting drills and ended with the kickers in the spotlight, as players and coaches watched Jimmy Pavel and Kevin Miller compete to fulfill a lifelong dream.

Eastern cornerbacks take pointers from calm new coach

The air was stifling Tuesday afternoon, but fortunately for the Eastern Washington cornerbacks, their coach didn’t turn the heat any higher. “I’m more of a teacher than a yeller,” said Cherokee Valeria, a former wide receiver at Central Washington who joined Beau Baldwin’s staff before spring drills.

Eastern starts steamy two-a-days

There’s nothing easy about two-a-day drills, including giving them up. Seniors Jeff Minnerly and Will Post were almost wistful as the Eastern Washington football team began two-a-day sessions on a warm Monday morning. The sweat was pouring, mixing with the emotion of saying goodbye to a way of life they’ve known every August since they were kids.

Eagles expect tight ends to help balance offense

It was easy last spring to overlook the tight ends on the Eastern Washington football team. Only two of them were healthy enough to practice. Throw in three All-American wide receivers, and it was tempting to forget about them entirely. But if the Eagles want a more balanced offense this season – a stated goal of head coach Beau Baldwin – the tight ends may well be the fulcrum. “Of course we want more balance,” said tight ends coach Brian Strandley, who joined Baldwin’s staff before spring drills. “But there’s a fine line, and that is that the run game and the pass game work together. “We’re striving for that balance.”

EWU football freshmen get helping hand

The college football learning curve is steep, but it’s easier if your classmates include a trio of All-Americans. Freshman wide receivers Keylin Huddleston and Cooper Kupp stepped on the practice field this week alongside 17 other true freshmen, all of them trying to earn some respect while not being overawed by the talent already here.

Eagles enjoy return of injured players on first day of practice

In more ways than one, the Eastern Washington University football team hit the ground running Wednesday. The first day of fall camp brought a smile to the face of Eagles head coach Beau Baldwin, who saw returning veterans fully healed and newcomers already a chapter ahead in the playbook.

EWU football team ready to do some camping

The worst is over. That’s the idea, at least, as Eastern Washington opens fall football camp this week. Five weeks of grueling summer conditioning will give way Wednesday to three weeks of something a bit more manageable.

EWU will face all four Pac-12 NW schools

PARK CITY, Utah – Eastern Washington University Athletic Director Bill Chaves is taking his family to Disneyland this week, but not before working a little magic of his own. Last week, he completed a football quadfecta of sorts, scheduling a football game at Oregon in 2015 that gives the Eagles a chance to play all four Northwest Pac-12 teams in as many years. The Eagles will get a $450,000 payoff to play the Ducks, bringing the payout to exactly $2 million for five games against Pac-12 teams.
