Gonzaga’s opportunities to make a favorable impression in national circles tend to dwindle this time of year. Right or wrong, the perception is if the Zags win another WCC title they’re simply doing what is expected in a lightly regarded conference they’ve dominated, followed closely by the narrative that GU struggles to keep its competitive edge during the WCC season.

Persistence pays dividends

Kevin Pangos was just doing what he usually does. He was putting up extra shots Wednesday night in the Martin Centre. Portland was practicing in the McCarthey Athletic Center. And one of Gonzaga coach Mark Few’s son’s teams was practicing in a nearby gym. Few stopped the practice and took the youngsters over to watch Pangos go through his shooting routine.

Gonzaga notes: WCC steps up nationally, on offense

Here are the first four items mentioned in this week’s WCC media release: Two WCC teams (BYU and Gonzaga) rank in the top 10 nationally in scoring. The WCC is the top conference nationally in field-goal percentage (45.3). Four WCC programs (BYU, GU, Saint Mary’s and Portland) are in the top 40 in assists. And the WCC ranks second in 3-point percentage (36.6).

Mighty Bulldogs tame Tigers

Pacific tried man-to-man defense, some zone, extending pressure into the back court. The Tigers tried to get physical. They burned three timeouts in the first 18 minutes. Nothing seemed to bother the Gonzaga Bulldogs, whose shooting percentage hovered in the 70s for most of the first half and they went on to rout Pacific 91-60 in front of a full house of 6,000 Saturday at McCarthey Athletic Center.
