‘Just watching greatness’: Gonzaga’s Anton Watson goes out a winner on Senior Night

There was no shortage of tributes for Gonzaga’s lone senior, Anton Watson, on Senior Night. One of the coolest happened long before 6,000 filled the McCarthey Athletic Center to witness Gonzaga’s 94-81 victory over Santa Clara on Saturday. More than an hour before tip-off, Watson had one basket all to himself, putting up shots and free throws with his teammates watching from in seats along the sideline. "Just watching greatness,” Graham Ike said.

‘We got the job done’: Gonzaga thumps Portland 86-65, turns attention to rematch with Santa Clara

The latest victory in Gonzaga’s five-game winning streak looked a lot like the first four. Junior post Graham Ike controlled the lane and led the Bulldogs in scoring with 20 points, his fourth consecutive game with at least 20. The starting five all posted solid numbers, including Nolan Hickman’s four 3-pointers and 19 points, and Ben Gregg, who was a prep standout at Clackamas High about 20 miles down the road, added three 3s and 13 points, all in the first half.

Gonzaga-Portland key matchup: Vukasin Masic brings versatility to Pilots offense

That leaves two viable candidates in redshirt sophomore guard Vukasin Masic and 6-foot-8 freshman guard Tyler Harris. The nod goes to Masic, who has been a fixture in the starting lineup while Harris, one of the top freshmen in the conference, is just returning from an ankle injury. Masic, a Serbian native, has good size (6-5 and 210 pounds), is a capable ballhandler (leads the Pilots in assists in conference at 3.7) and connects on a team-leading 39.6% beyond the 3-point arc.

Gonzaga gaining ground in polls, brackets projections, but more ‘work to do’

Gonzaga continues to move up, ever so slightly, in the eyes of AP Top 25 voters and NCAA Tournament bracket gurus. The Zags weren’t in the field of 68 in bracket projections two weeks ago after falling to Saint Mary’s 64-62 at home. A four-game winning streak has the Zags showing up in an increasing number of brackets and nearing a return to the AP Top 25.

Gonzaga weathers ‘a serious storm,’ pulls away from shorthanded Loyola Marymount for 91-74 win

It took the better part of 32 minutes, but Gonzaga finally shook off a feisty Loyola Marymount squad that suited up just six scholarship players due to multiple injuries. Clinging to a one-point lead, Gonzaga rattled off 15 consecutive points and closed with a 19-3 spurt to pull away for a 91-74 West Coast Conference victory Thursday at Gersten Pavilion.

Key matchup: “Juice” Hill provides spark to LMU’s injury-depleted offense

Dominick Harris, the former Gonzaga guard and current leading scorer for Loyola Marymount, occupied the key matchup space two weeks ago but his status is uncertain for Thursday’s GU-LMU game due to a knee injury. Keli Leaupepe, an accomplished fifth-year forward, would probably be next on the list but he’s sidelined with a torn plantar fascia. That leaves three candidates with similar stats: point guard Justice “Juice” Hill (10.6 points, 4.1 assists), guard Justin Wright (11.0 points, 47.6% from the field) and forward Alex Merkviladze (11.3 points, 6.6 rebounds).

Gonzaga stings Portland again with 3-point shooting barrage in 96-64 victory

The Kennel Club’s “We Want Tacos” chant usually surfaces later in the second half of games when Gonzaga is closing in on the required 10 3-pointers. The first chant Wednesday arrived late in the first half after Anton Watson made Gonzaga’s ninth 3-pointer. The fans didn’t have to wait long as Nolan Hickman served up coupons for free tacos by connecting from deep just 90 seconds into the second half.

Gonzaga, Portland seeking momentum in Wednesday’s clash

Two teams that haven’t had the seasons they envisioned collide Wednesday at the McCarthey Athletic Center. Gonzaga, accustomed to winning West Coast Conference titles and making extended runs in March Madness, trails Saint Mary’s by two games in the standings and currently doesn’t make the tournament in most bracket projections. Portland won 19 games in coach Shantay Legans’ first season, but year three has been up and down. The Pilots (9-15, 3-6 WCC) showed positive signs with a pair of wins last week after a rough 2-12 stretch.
