Tacoma Community College's Dazmond Kinlow, a 6-foot-9 forward/center, has made an oral commitment to play men's basketball at the University of Idaho. Kinlow averaged 12.5 points, 12.9 rebounds and a whopping 7.8 blocked shots per game before breaking his hand in TCC's 15th game last year.

Mark Rypien visited an old friend Wednesday morning - Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Rodney Peete, who suffered a season-ending knee injury Monday night. A couple of hours later, Rypien won a spot on the Eagles' roster with an impressive workout that will result in the signing of a one-year contract today.

The University of Idaho has scheduled a news conference for 1:30 this afternoon in the Kibbie Dome, where it is expected that Oval Jaynes will be introduced as the Vandals' new athletic director. Jaynes left an A.D.'s meeting in Dallas on Tuesday to fly to the Palouse, sources said.

A long season could get substantially longer for Boise State on Saturday when it visits Arizona State. The fifth-ranked Sun Devils (4-0) are led by quarterback Jake Plummer, who played his prep football in Boise. He turned down Washington State, among others, for ASU.

Mark Rypien turns 34 years old today. His gift: Possibly an Eagle. Rypien, the former Washington State Cougar and Super Bowl MVP, will work out today for the Philadelphia Eagles, who lost starting quarterback Rodney Peete for the remainder of the season to a knee injury suffered in Monday night's setback to Dallas.

He previously was A.D. at Colorado State from 1986-91 and an assistant A.D. at Auburn. He has more than 30 years of experience as an administrator/coach in collegiate athletics. Jaynes would replace Pete Liske, who left to become the A.D. at Toledo. Kathy Clark has served as Idaho's interim A.D. Jaynes was selected over Utah assistant A.D. Peter Hart and Cincinnati associate A.D. Jim Schaus. Bob Stull, a fourth finalist, withdrew from consideration last week. Pre-trial conference continued The pre-trial conference for three University of Idaho basketball players, each charged with one count of battery, has been continued to Tuesday, Oct. 15. Reggie Rose, Marcus Wallace and Avery Curry face charges following a mid-September disturbance in Moscow's University Inn. Sports information director departs Idaho sports information director Sean Johnson has accepted a new job as assistant athletic director for media relations at the University of North Texas. Interim athletic director Kathy Clark announced Tuesday that Becky Paull has been named interim SID. Paull was a sportswriter at the Idaho Statesman in Boise from 1979-1996. She joined Idaho as an assistant SID in July. Paull is a graduate of Lewiston High and UI.

Three University of Idaho basketball players, including last year's leading scorer Reggie Rose, pleaded not guilty last week to battery charges stemming from incidents earlier this month in Moscow. Junior forward Marcus Wallace, who played the last two years at College of Southern Idaho, junior guard Avery Curry, a transfer from Florida State, and Rose, a senior guard, have a pre-trial conference this afternoon.

There were growing indications Monday night that the University of Idaho plans on selecting Oval Jaynes as its new athletic director, numerous sources in Moscow said. Idaho's search officially is down to three: Jaynes, who has resigned as A.D. at Pittsburgh; Jim Schaus, associate A.D. at Cincinnati; and Peter Hart, assistant A.D. at Utah.

There are numerous items cluttering Idaho football coach Chris Tormey's desk - videotapes, notes, books, etc. There isn't, however, a panic button. Tormey is highly disappointed by Idaho's 1-3 start for the second consecutive season. He was enormously deflated by Saturday's 27-21 loss to Southwest Texas State. Tormey says flatly: "It's a game we should have won."

The football programs at Idaho and Southwest Texas State have gone in opposite directions since UI pasted the Bobcats 66-38 in 1993. You may recall that Idaho was helpless in that game against the Bobcats' spread option, giving up 418 rushing yards. You may also recall that Southwest Texas State couldn't stop Idaho's run OR pass, surrendering 588 total yards.

Eastern Washington clobbered the Southwest Texas State Bobcats 38-7 last Saturday. The next day, EWU coach Mike Kramer received a call from his old buddy, Idaho coach Chris Tormey, whose Vandals play the Bobcats this Saturday.

Obed Sullivan's belt fits OK. Sullivan, one of the featured attractions on tonight's fight card at the Coeur d'Alene Tribal Bingo/Casino in Worley, Idaho, is the International Boxing Federation's intercontinental heavyweight champion.

This is a game to which one standard football cliche just doesn't apply. Can't use the old, "There's a sense of urgency." Nope. We're forced to go with "Turnabout is fair play," and, "The shoe's on the other foot."

Oh, the futility. A paltry 494 yards gained in two games. A measly 3.7 yards per rush. An offense that generated one touchdown last Sunday. A quarterback who was 11 of 19 for 135 yards. Only Cincinnati's team stats are more of an eyesore.
