Vandals roll over Walla Walla University

MOSCOW, Idaho – Idaho has played so poorly coming out of halftime this season that Don Verlin decided to try something new Saturday night in a 91-47 whitewashing of Walla Walla University. The Vandals coach told his starting lineup if they gave up one bucket – or even committed a shooting foul – to start the second half, he would bring in five fresh players to try to get a defensive stop.

Idaho staff taking on a Vandals look

MOSCOW, Idaho – New University of Idaho football coach Paul Petrino, a onetime Vandals assistant himself, seems intent on filling his staff with coaches who know what it’s like to coach or play at UI. On Monday, Petrino announced the hiring of Ronnie Lee as defensive coordinator and secondary coach, and Mike Anderson as linebackers coach.

Vandals name Paul Petrino new football coach

MOSCOW, Idaho – Growing up in a football-mad family in Montana, Paul and Bobby Petrino heard the same message from their father that he told his other players at Carroll College: The game is about discipline and execution. “Execution is created by constant repetition that creates a conditioned reflex in a given situation,” Paul said. “Anyone that played for my dad can repeat that right now.”

Vandals choose Petrino, Arkansas’ offensive coordinator

MOSCOW, Idaho – Paul Petrino has tasted success as a player and assistant coach at various levels and locales, from tiny Carroll College in Helena, Mont., to the Southeastern Conference at Arkansas. Next on his list is to attempt a major reclamation project at Idaho, a school out of the national spotlight but one he's familiar with.

Idaho men snatch hoops victory from UC Davis

MOSCOW, Idaho – Denzel Douglas is pretty sure he’ll never get an easier steal in his life. And as far as his first year at Idaho is concerned, he might not have a more important one either. With UC Davis charging, and the Vandals in danger of dropping their third straight game, Douglas swiped an errant inbounds pass with 19 seconds left and sank two ensuing free throws.

Petrino, Bennett in mix at UI

MOSCOW, Idaho – Arkansas offensive coordinator Paul Petrino and Central Washington's Blaine Bennett, two coaches with Idaho ties, will interview for the Vandals' head coaching job, The Spokesman-Review has learned. Petrino and Bennett are two of five finalists for the vacant position. The other finalists – San Jose State offensive coordinator Brian Lindgren, Wyoming defensive coordinator Chris Tormey and UI interim coach Jason Gesser – have already met with Idaho or have interviews scheduled.

Gilbertson talks to UI, but not a coaching candidate

MOSCOW, Idaho – Former Idaho football coach Keith Gilbertson met with athletic director Rob Spear about the Vandals’ vacant job earlier this month. But the conversation was more about the direction of the UI program, Gilbertson said, than the potential of him coming back to the Palouse. Gilbertson, 64, was on his way to watch Washington State, where his son is a quarterback, play UCLA on Nov. 10 when Spear called him. The two talked about “where Idaho is going” and ways to rejuvenate the program, Gilbertson said.

Vandals face potent Aggies

MOSCOW, Idaho – Their quarterback is in the midst of a record-setting season, their coach is suddenly on other schools’ wish lists and they’ll go down as one of the best teams in program history. All this describes the nationally ranked Utah State Aggies. But it must sound vaguely familiar to Idaho fans, too.

Vandals find win, but not a point

MOSCOW, Idaho — The Idaho men’s basketball team is no more settled at point guard than it was at the start the season two weeks ago. But at least the Vandals now have a win to their name as they sort it out.

PULLMAN – With Connor Halliday absent from practice Monday night, Washington State football coach Mike Leach said senior quarterback Jeff Tuel will “probably start” Friday in the Apple Cup. Another senior leader for the Cougars, however, might be a spectator against Washington.

Idaho basketball blow 15-point lead, loses

MOSCOW, Idaho – The University of Idaho men’s basketball team held a 15-point lead and all the momentum, but it all turned quickly and Montana came back to beat the Vandals at Memorial Gym on Saturday evening, 66-63. Idaho (0-2) started the second half on an 11-2 run to take a four-point lead to 13 points at 45-32 with 16:32 to play, then extended its lead to 50-35 at the 12:27 mark of the half. From that point on, it was all Montana (2-1).

Vandals fumble away chance to tie

MOSCOW, Idaho – The anguish on Justin Veltung’s face couldn’t be hidden. Even with his helmet on. Even with a coach and teammate trying to console him as he walked off the Kibbie Dome field after his final home game. Idaho’s nightmare season hit another low Saturday with a 34-27 loss to Texas-San Antonio, and it was Veltung’s inexplicable fumbled punt with just over 2 minutes left that thwarted a last-minute Vandals’ rally.

Idaho has a shot at home against UTSA

MOSCOW, Idaho – In the visitor’s locker room last weekend at Lavell Edwards Stadium, head football coach Jason Gesser gave what he later termed a “heartfelt talk” to Idaho players moments after BYU had steamrolled the Vandals by 39 points. The speech wasn’t about what Idaho had done – or not done – on a cold, dreary night in Provo, Utah. No, he wanted the team to quickly refocus its energy to the week ahead and the last home game for 19 seniors.

Gesser wants to stay with Idaho, head coach or not

MOSCOW, Idaho — Jason Gesser insists the Idaho football program can reach a level of consistency where bowl appearances become the norm, not a once-in-a-decade anomaly. He’s also sure he wants to be at UI to see that vision come to fruition – whether he’s the permanent head football coach or not.

Raiders run over Vandals

MOSCOW, Idaho –The bundle of turnovers in the first half, the missed free throws, the repeated defensive breakdowns – all these disturbed Idaho men’s basketball coach Don Verlin on Friday night. But the biggest source of consternation for Verlin was the Vandals’ intensity – or lack of it – in an 80-70 loss to Wright State in both teams’ season opener.

Vandals face BYU’s mighty defense

MOSCOW, Idaho – Idaho center Mike Marboe understands how talented and experienced BYU is on defense. He saw it firsthand last year in a 42-7 loss to the Cougars, and it’s clear in the game film he watched this week. But that hasn’t dissuaded him from carrying an upbeat outlook into tonight’s nonconference football game with BYU in Provo, Utah.

Total ownership

MOSCOW, Idaho – In four years, Don Verlin has shaped the Idaho men’s basketball program to his liking. The roster is fully his own. The four seniors on this year’s team are scheduled to graduate in December or in the spring. The demanding system he’s carried over from Utah State has yielded consistent results.

Vandals lose in Gesser’s first game as head coach

MOSCOW, Idaho – Late in the third quarter, before Idaho unraveled in a 42-13 loss to San Jose State, redshirt freshman linebacker Elan Richard timed a jump perfectly at the line of scrimmage and swatted an attempted pass to the turf. It was the best play of Richard’s short career, one that could have jump-started the Vandals, who were down by just eight points.

Vandals play first game under Gesser

MOSCOW, Idaho – The last time the University of Idaho played a football game without Robb Akey on the sideline was Nov. 25, 2006. Dennis Erickson was the coach. San Jose State was the opponent. And Jason Gesser was still a professional quarterback. The Vandals begin the post-Akey era today by again hosting SJSU at the Kibbie Dome, and leading the remade Idaho football program is the 33-year-old Gesser.
