Every year, Tom Jeannot polls the students in his ethics class at Gonzaga University about lying. And every year the consensus is the same: Lying is generally acceptable. "They mainly think of lying in utilitarian terms," he said. "If a particular lie produces more good consequences than bad consequences, then they are not morally offended by it." Church Holds First Forum On City Issues ‘Too Silent’ Church Hopes To Spark Fruitful Communitywide Discussion

More than 200 people gathered Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church to consider whether Spokane is a "good city." It was a powerful debut for City Forum, a monthly speakers program with the downtown church as host. Politicians, preachers and business people packed the auditorium for the luncheon. The idea of a church-based speakers program was imported from San Diego, where First Presbyterian's pastor, the Rev. Woody Garvin, used to work. Similar programs are running in San Francisco and Seattle.

We Say ‘I Do’ … But Then We Don’t Pastors Striving To Strengthen Marriage Vows

Washington residents believe marriage is a lifetime bond, despite the fact that half of all marriages in the state end in divorce, according to a recent poll. "What people say and what people do are two totally different things," said John Tusant, executive director of the Greater Spokane Association of Evangelicals. "People say marriage is important, yet marriages everywhere are falling apart."

Skylstad To Continue As Bishop Of Spokane Diocese Bishop Brunnett Of Helena Named New Archbishop Of Seattle District

The Vatican announced appointment of two Northwest archbishops Tuesday, and many Catholics in Eastern Washington were relieved Spokane Bishop William Skylstad wasn't one of them. "You bloom where you're planted," Skylstad said. He said he had paid scant attention to speculation that he was in line for one of the jobs. "I'm committed to being in Spokane," he said.

Feds Say Protests Escalated To Arson Man Suspected In 8 Fires At Abortion Clinics

Federal prosecutors say a Wenatchee man's abortion protests a decade ago escalated into a serial arson spree in which eight medical buildings were torched in four states. Richard T. Andrews set fire to offices and clinics in Montana, Idaho, California and Wyoming, prosecutors claim in court documents. He also may have targeted clinics in Spokane, according to notes seized from his car during a 1996 traffic stop.
