Hospitals set visitor rules

Two of the Inland Northwest’s top hospitals are restricting visiting in high-risk treatment areas starting today to stem the potential spread of swine flu. At Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center, only immediate family members at least 18 years old will be allowed to visit patients in four intensive care units as well as the Birth Place maternity area.

Weather agency opens to public

Weather geeks and would-be meteorologists will be in heaven Saturday. The Spokane office of the National Weather Service plans to hold an open house from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. to show the public how it monitors and forecasts weather.

Statue honors those who serve youth, community

A bronze sculpture recognizing the contributions of Scouting in Spokane now stands near the north end of the Monroe Street Bridge after a three-year campaign to finance its casting. The statue was placed a little more than a week ago at the edge of Veterans Court in Riverfront Park, a few steps from the bridge.

Garden designer offers workshops

An author and landscape designer who helped restore the Moore-Turner Heritage Gardens in Spokane will be giving a pair of workshops on garden design Saturday at the Corbin Art Center. Richard Hartlage, who was a consultant on the $1.4 million Moore-Turner restoration, will talk about the art of planting design during the workshops from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. and from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.

Freeway detour forced to detour

The construction of the north Spokane freeway isn’t occurring without some risk to public safety, which was demonstrated in a little-noticed event in the work zone last week. As part of the freeway construction, the state is lowering the level of U.S. Highway 2 north of Farwell Road where it crosses Peone Creek. The job involves excavation to build a new arched culvert over the creek that will be wide enough to allow wildlife to move back and forth beneath the highway.

Friend helps officers locate escaped patient

Three days after he slipped away from a group of mental patients at the Spokane County fair, Phillip A. Paul was caught Sunday afternoon near Goldendale, Wash., after conning a friend into giving him a ride out of Spokane last week. The criminally insane killer whose disappearance attracted national attention was taken into custody about 4 p.m. without incident along a roadway. He was carrying a backpack with food, clothing and personal items. He also had a guitar and sleeping bag. A hand scythe protruded from the pack.

Mike Schultz and Steven Sanford were looking for income-producing rental property when they stumbled across a huge brick-and-granite mansion for sale on the North Side a few years ago. They weren’t into historic preservation, and they didn’t have a clue about the rich story behind the property at 1506 W. Mission Ave. Nearly three years later, they've brought the home back to life and it's headed for the Spokane Register of Historic Places.

Baby, mom safe after Amber Alert

A 9-month-old girl and her teenage mother were reported safe Wednesday after Grant County sheriff’s deputies arrested the baby’s father in connection with a domestic assault on the mother. The baby was found on Tuesday in the custody of her father, Kevin James Vielle, 18, of Moses Lake, at a home northeast of Moses Lake. Vielle was arrested, deputies said.
