Longtime Central Valley teacher and coach Stan Chalich, youngest of iconic CV siblings who had a major athletic footprint there from the 1940s into the 1960s, participated in and has witnessed many of that school’s greatest sporting accomplishments. He ranks Tuesday’s Bears 4-3 girls tennis victory over Mead among them.

On a history-making evening, Sunnyside Christian boys basketball coach Dean Wagenaar took time to honor the efforts of a worthy foe. His Knights had just defeated Neah Bay 55-50 Saturday night in the Spokane Arena and cut down the nets following the school’s second straight state championship and fourth in five years at the Class 1B level.

State basketball excellence, no matter the B classification, has been a benchmark at Sunnyside Christian. The Knights reached a state final for the seventh time Friday night with a 50-44 win over Almira/Coulee-Hartline, the fourth in five years of 1B where they have half of their six state championships, all but one under coach Dean Wagenaar.

Call it the Western region tag team. In part because of a spectacular finish by North Idaho College national champion Jamelle Jones, and with a little help from Clackamas Community College two-time national champion Tyrell Fortune, the Cougars and host Cardinals put a one-two finish at the National Junior College Athletic Association wrestling championships.

Region 18 wrestlers discovered that on the first day of the National Junior College Athletic Association national championships being contested at the Spokane Convention Center. A sizeable crowd watched as North Idaho secured five All-Americans, four of them semifinalists, and is in a spirited multi-team title challenge led by Region 18 rival Clackamas Community College.

In his years as a successful wrestling coach that included two State 4A championships at Gonzaga Prep, Phil McLean’s teams had never won a regional wrestling tournament. His Mead Panthers rectified that slight as Greater Spokane League wrestlers and schools did pretty much the expected during a rugged daylong regional 4A tournament against Columbia Basin Big Nine foes.

Three Greater Spokane League wrestling team heavyweights went different ways in pursuit of postseason success. And each found it in the first of three successive tournaments that will culminate with Mat Classic XXIII on Feb. 18 and 19 in Tacoma. Mead and Central Valley had a stirring team competition in the District 8 4A that ended Saturday, while University dominated District 3A foes in the concurrent tourneys at Mead.

Titans capture mat title

Senior 215-pound wrestler Jordan Douglas isn’t No. 1 in his weight class at University. But he’s certainly a major reason the Titans remain No. 1 in the Greater Spokane League. Douglas, who backs Jake Laden in the weight class, rallied in the third period to beat Sheldon Cole 5-3 and Laden moved up and followed with a major decision at 285 over league unbeaten Dan Schoulz.

Throughout a four-year wrestling career at Central Valley that was filled with coaching changes, Jarod Maynes has remained remarkably consistent. Maynes is wrestling for his fourth head coach since debuting on varsity as a freshman.
