Everson, Ressa, Patchin honored with awards

Sometimes a 25-Year Award winner packs enough on his résumé to be worth two awards. Joe Everson is that person. Indeed, behind the scenes, he’s had an impact on this community for just about that long. Everson, along with longtime University baseball coach Don Ressa and KXLY broadcaster Dennis Patchin, were honored by the Inland Northwest Sportswriters and Broadcasters on Wednesday at the 34th Junior Sports Awards Luncheon at the Convention Center with plaques for their more than 25 years of contributions in their fields.

GSL excels at regional wrestling

Three Greater Spokane League 3A regional champions had separate reasons for their state-qualifying performances Saturday at University. North Central senior Kenny Jenks made good on his last chance at making Mat Classic next weekend in Tacoma. Shadle Park junior Terrence McKinney is seeking to improve on his state finish of a year ago. And University junior Ryan Gabel wants redemption after being legislated out of state last year.

Then & Now: Lisa Comstock-Schultz

When Eastern Washington University’s diminutive point guard Chene Cooper this year became the women’s basketball all-time assist leader at the school, she broke a record that had stood for more than a quarter century. The 27-year-old mark, set by Lisa Comstock between 1982 and 1985, is remarkable considering its length. Women’s basketball has improved exponentially since those early days of Title IX that mandated equal opportunity for women athletes.

Mead runs away with District 8 4A wrestling

When Mead began its string of five straight finals wins from the strength of its lineup, four by pin, the team race was already a foregone conclusion. The Panthers had piled up 451.5 points before the District 8 4A wrestling tournament finals had even started.

Central Valley takes Battle of the Bone

Wrestling with an urgency that was lacking the night before, Central Valley got past rival University in front of a capacity crowd amid the pandemonium they call the Battle of the Bone. The Bears showed grit by surviving precarious back-point situations and winning the matches they were supposed to for the 33-24 victory and a share of second place with the host Titans (both finishing the season with 7-2 records.)

Beloved Shadle, Rogers coach eulogized

Jim Paton’s life was so fascinating and touched so many lives, that it could have been made into a movie. And so it was, in a poignant video on the big screen Saturday during his memorial service before a packed audience in the Shadle Park High School performing arts theater.

University stays unbeaten in GSL wrestling

Before the wrestling season, University coach Don Owen wasn’t sure about the quality of his team. Nearly the whole lineup had graduated and this season’s roster was peppered with freshmen, sophomores, juniors and inexperienced seniors.

Staying involved

The piece of paper is weathered, dating back to the 1984-85 Greater Spokane League basketball season. The crude chart by this sportswriter was discovered recently and provided a week-by-week update on three Spokane Valley athletes’ assault on GSL career scoring and rebounding records.

Several area wrestlers win at PNW Classic

Cameron Babcock is too busy with other sports to devote the offseason to wrestling. That didn’t prevent the Shadle Park athlete, in his first matches since dropping to 195 pounds, from winning the weight class during the Pacific Northwest Classic Saturday at University High School.

Deer Park’s Jorgensen has built an elite program

When he first became Deer Park’s head wrestling coach, Matt Jorgensen wondered what he had done. “Dean (Largent, the former longtime successful Stags coach) said I should put in for it,” Jorgensen said. “I answered, ‘Do you think I really should? It’s a little over my head.’ ”

Seniors lead state-bound Central Valley

Like most high schools, Central Valley hoists placards on a gymnasium wall recognizing each sports’ league, regional and state accomplishments. Conspicuously visible is the blank space beneath volleyball. The Bears remedied that last weekend by qualifying for their first State 4A tournament thanks, in part, to three third-year varsity players.
