Exchange students speak language of basketball in GSL

Basketball fans in Washington got an early taste of the coming international basketball revolution more than two decades ago when German exchange student Detlef Schrempf helped Centralia to the 1981 State AA high school championship. Things changed for standout players such as Schrempf, who went on to a University of Washington Hall of Fame and successful NBA career. The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association prohibited them from playing varsity sports, fearing a flaunting of the intent of the exchange program and high school athletes.

Early games give something to chew on

Dec. 7: With a 20-game schedule and teams still nursing injuries and illness, it's way to early to make any assumptions about the Greater Spokane League basketball season. But after seeing half the league here are a few observations. First the boys: What a difference a year has made. The teams I've seen – Mead, Ferris, Central Valley, Gonzaga Prep, Lewis and Clark, Rogers and Mt. Spokane – are more physically developed, so the GSL won't rely solely on finesse, which is a good thing.

Mike Vlahovich: Prep sports for players, not the parents

Last week's column on the inherent problems with club sports overlapping high school athletics ran the expected gamut of opinion and one surprising thought. Some readers said high schools must accommodate elite club athletes to assure they field the best teams. One high school coach said he believes kids should play as many sports as possible. Another said that life is about choices, and if there is a conflict it is up to athletes to decide.
