Coeur d’Alene police officer dies after being shot in line of duty

A Rathdrum man accused of gunning down a Coeur d’Alene police sergeant early Tuesday morning on a quiet residential street will be charged with murder. Sgt. Greg Moore, a 16-year veteran of the Coeur d’Alene Police Department, spent most of the day in critical condition after he was shot in the head by a suspect who then stole the officer’s patrol car and fled. Police said Moore, a husband and father of two, died 5:50 p.m. at Kootenai Health.

Hundreds gather to remember fallen Coeur d’Alene police officer

Hundreds of people gathered in a Coeur d’Alene parking lot Tuesday evening to pray, sing “Amazing Grace,” shed tears and show their support for police following a deadly attack on a highly respected and decorated police officer. The outpouring of grief and appreciation for Coeur d’Alene police Sgt. Greg Moore, who died from a gunshot wound about an hour before the candlelight vigil began, touched police Chief Lee White.

Coeur d’Alene lawyer Scott Reed, whose long career was highlighted by cases to protect natural areas from development and maintain public access to places like Tubbs Hill and Sanders Beach, died Saturday night at home. He was 87. Reed had retired in the past year after nearly 60 years as an attorney and advocate for environmental causes.

Coeur d’Alene Stand Down to aid homeless veterans

Homeless veterans can pick up fresh supplies for living on the streets at St. Vincent de Paul’s annual North Idaho Veterans Stand Down next weekend in Coeur d’Alene. The Department of Veterans Affairs will hand out surplus military supplies including sleeping bags, shirts, pants, boots, socks and gloves at the event, which provides a variety of services to homeless and disadvantaged veterans in the Idaho Panhandle. It’s set for 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Kootenai County Fairgrounds on Government Way.

Texas dealership buys Dave Smith Auto Group

A fast-growing Texas car dealership has purchased Dave Smith Auto Group with plans to spread the successful Kellogg-based company’s brand throughout the Northwest. The deal with RFJ Auto Partners Inc. of Plano, Texas, closed April 20, and the Smith family principals will lead a northern group of dealerships from their North Idaho headquarters.

Ryser, a Spokane Falls Community College student, reflected on her two-year fight with breast cancer and said she looks forward to earning a college degree and becoming an accountant.

PLUMMER, Idaho – Perry Kitt arrived at the Benewah Medical Center for his foot care appointment – a regular stop for the Coeur d’Alene Tribe elder and diabetic.    “How are your feet doing?” said Judy Gordon, a registered nurse and certified diabetes educator.    Kitt, a 70-year-old Vietnam War veteran who grew up in DeSmet, answered, “I can’t see them. I’m too fat.” Joking aside, he described what’s bothering him lately: a muscle in one leg hurts when he steps forward. Gordon talked with him about compression socks, clipped his toenails and applied lotion.

CdA wheelchair access advocate dies in crash

A Coeur d’Alene man who recovered from a severe spinal cord injury to lead an active life and advocate for those with physical challenges was killed Sunday when his all-terrain vehicle went over a cliff above Lake Pend Oreille. Thomas W. McTevia, 42, died along with a friend, Tina A. Hoisington, 45, of Lewiston. Both were in the Polaris ATV when it plunged down a 500-foot embankment at Bernard Overlook just east of Farragut State Park, the Idaho State Police said.

Investors buy former Coldwater Creek campus

A group of four investors has purchased the bulk of the former Coldwater Creek corporate campus in the city of Kootenai next to Sandpoint. Lew Patrick, who owns Sandpoint Storage and Patrick Properties, formed the investment group, L3M LLC. The purchase from CWC Creditors’ Liquidating Trust was effective April 6. The price was not disclosed.

CdA food truck event serves as test drive

Even with a bracing wind blowing off the lake, the first food truck rally in downtown Coeur d’Alene did a brisk business Sunday. Hundreds lined up for grilled cheese sandwiches, tacos, crepes, sausages, jerk chicken, steak wraps and more. Six food vendors from Coeur d’Alene and Spokane set up on the edge of McEuen Park next to the city library and cooked their dishes into the evening, or until they ran out of ingredients. The event was a test drive for the Lake City, which may permit a larger collection of food trucks to serve crowds at Car d’Lane, the classic car celebration in June.

Nonprofit group aims to tackle child hunger in North Idaho

More than half the students in Bonner County schools qualify for free or reduced-price meals during the school week. But what do those children eat on weekends? And do they eat enough? A new nonprofit aims to tackle child hunger in Sandpoint and surrounding communities by putting more money into weekend food bags sent home with kids from low-income families. An estimated 2,000 hungry kids in the county could be getting more to eat, organizers say.

Hamilton leaving CdA school board

Tom Hamilton, who led a conservative takeover of the Coeur d’Alene School Board four years ago, said Thursday he won’t seek a second term as school trustee. Hamilton, the director of quality for Ground Force Manufacturing in Post Falls, announced his intention at a midday meeting of the Reagan Republicans, a group that helped put him on the school board in 2011.
