The leftovers: Nuggets, notes and quotes from WSU’s 52-23 win over Oregon State

Time to empty out the notebook. Anything you may have missed from an emphatic Cougar win Saturday afternoon at Martin Stadium. Starting with the most essential, Oregon State quarterback Jake Luton was discharged from Pullman Regional Hospital Saturday evening and was able to return home. Luton was stretchered off the field after taking a violent hit from Cougars safety Jalen Thompson in the fourth quarter. Luton’s dad reported on Facebook that his son had suffered what probably is a “thoracic spine fracture,” though the Beavers have yet to provide an official injury report. Luton also posted on Twitter Saturday night, “Thank you to everyone for all the kind messages and support. I’ll be back! #GoBeavs”

He can say with absolute certainty that there isn’t, but before just handing this win over to the Washington State coach, maybe consider a few of history’s greatest offenses.

The pick: Why Washington State will beat Oregon State on Saturday

Well, here’s a hint: Mike Riley was still calling the shots and Sean Mannion was still throwing the passes. Riley now enters his third year at the University of Nebraska and Mannion embarks on a third season in the National Football League. Mhmm, it’s been THAT long.

With reeling Oregon State in town, Washington State looking to iron out its offensive kinks

Last week’s triple-overtime win over Boise State – Washington State came back from 21 in the fourth quarter to stun the Broncos, if you happened to be off the grid – churned the heart more than the heart is meant to be churned. The season is only two weeks old, but already the Cougars could probably use one of those low-key afternoon games against a lesser opponent to iron out the kinks and reset before things ramp up again.
