In a battle for the top of the Northeast A League, the Lakeside boys basketball team withstood a second-half comeback and cruised to a 74-59 win over Medical Lake on Friday night at Nine Mile Falls. The Eagles’ length inside continually gave Lakeside second and third chances and senior Ryan Quigley camped out at the free-throw line, hitting 14 of them, to lead his team to victory on senior night.

The Gonzaga women’s basketball team couldn’t get out of its own way to start the game, but the Bulldogs turned on the jets and raced to a commanding 76-49 win Thursday night over Santa Clara. Gonzaga senior Keani Albanez scored a career-high 22 points as the Bulldogs (18-4, 11-0 West Coast Conference) won their 12th consecutive game in front of 5,082 fans inside the McCarthey Athletic Center.

The Whitworth men and women’s basketball teams have thrown up some impressive numbers as both teams begin the second halves of their conference seasons tonight against Lewis & Clark at Whitworth Fieldhouse. The No. 17 women (16-1, 7-1 Northwest Conference) started the season on a 14-game winning streak before losing Jan. 17 at undefeated George Fox. The No. 21 men (16-2, 8-0) have won 15 straight games since losing Nov. 22 to St. Thomas, which is ranked No. 2 by D3hoops.com.

As a team, the Lutes shot only 21.4 percent from the field in the first half and appeared lucky to be down just 13 points – 35-22 – at the break.

The Whitworth women’s basketball team allowed Pacific Lutheran to hang close for a half but the Pirates plundered the Lutes in the second half for a 65-49 victory Saturday at Whitworth Fieldhouse. “We didn’t have much energy to start the game,” coach Helen Higgs said. “But I was happy with how we responded. We had a lot more bounce in our legs in the second half.”

The Gonzaga women’s basketball team faces a pair of games this weekend that will go a long way toward deciding the conference championship. The first-place Zags (14-4, 7-0) complete the first half of conference play when they travel to take on Saint Mary’s (13-5, 6-1) on Thursday and Pacific (14-5, 5-2) on Saturday. The Gaels’ only West Coast Conference loss came to Pacific, which lost road games to BYU and San Diego.

The Gonzaga women’s basketball team suffered through one of its worst outside-shooting games of the year, but Sunny Greinacher had a career day to fuel a 76-62 win Saturday over visiting Loyola Marymount. The Bulldogs shot 2 of 22 from the 3-point line, but Greinacher and center Shelby Cheslek both had double-doubles to put away the pesky Lions, who have lost 13 in a row.
