Medical Lake boys second at State 1A

The Medical Lake boys track team scored more points this weekend than their 2014 1A championship team. But the Cardinals couldn’t match the numbers from King’s and finished in second place. Medical Lake finished the highest of any of the local schools at the conclusion Saturday of the 1A, 2B and 1B championships at Eastern Washington University’s Roos Field. Also in 1A, Riverside tied for third with Meridian.

Wildcats win, then are KO’d by Mercer

Mt. Spokane posted one dramatic victory Saturday, but the Wildcats couldn’t string their hits together in the second game and fell 3-1 to Mercer Island in the State 3A baseball playoffs. Mt. Spokane beat Columbia River 6-5 in the early game at Whitworth University’s Merkel Field. But the Islanders (19-7) did just enough to beat the Wildcats and advance to the state semifinals next week at the University of Washington.

Mt. Spokane wins to make it to State 3A baseball round of 16

Just nine days after Shadle Park shut out Mt. Spokane 1-0 to force the Wildcats to win their way to state the hard way, the Wildcats got their revenge Monday with a 9-3 victory that sends them to the 3A regional playoff round of 16. The Wildcats edged Kennewick 6-5 on Saturday in a loser-out game that coach Alex Schuerman said was one of the best wins in program history. Schuerman then threw senior Stephen Streltzoff at the Highlanders on Monday and the lankly lefty had it going.

Southridge edges Shadle Park in title game

Shadle Park loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh inning Saturday, but leadoff hitter Jahden Nguyen’s grounder got snatched by the Southridge third baseman and the Suns from Kennewick got the 3-2 win to take the 3A regional championship and earn their way into the state playoffs. In the earlier game, Mt. Spokane (18-4) beat Kennewick 6-5 in eight innings to advance to the late loser-out game against the Highlanders. But a thunderstorm hit the area prompting officials to postpone the game until Monday at 4 p.m. at Al K. Jackson Field.

Ferris boys win last race, win by point

In a track showdown cut from Hollywood, the Ferris Saxons, trailing by a point entering the final event, edged Central Valley in the 4x400 relay to nip the Bears by a point and capture the District 8 4A championship at Spokane Falls Community College. The Saxons took the early lead in the relay and Liam Cossette held it as he handed the baton to Sam Bloom for the final leg. On the third turn, Central Valley’s Collin Nelson caught Bloom, but the 400- and 800-meter champion put on a kick to win and give the Saxons the title by a score of 167-166.

Mead edges University 1-0 in 11 innings

In what turned out to be the longest of three 1-0 games played in the Greater Spokane League on Friday, University beat Mead on a throwing error after 11 innings of great pitching and defense.
