Whitworth football breaks into Top 25

After matching its best start since it went 10-0 in 2006, the Whitworth Pirates (6-0, 3-0 Northwest Conference) are ranked No. 25 this week in both the D3football.com Top 25 and the AFCA Division III Coaches Poll. The Pirates go on the road Saturday to take on conference powerhouse No. 2 Linfield (5-0, 3-0), which has beaten Whitworth the last seven seasons.

Quick-starting Whitworth opens conference play by defeating George Fox

Whitworth got off to its usual fast start, which was too much for George Fox to overcome, in a conference-opening 37-14 victory Saturday for the Pirates’ homecoming at the Pine Bowl. The Pirates (4-0, 1-0) have outscored their opponents 112-3 in the first half this season. But the Bruins (2-2, 0-1) were able to stop Whitworth and sustain a couple of drives to outscore the Pirates 14-10 in the second half.

Gonzaga Prep rolls past Shadle Park for 5-0 record

Shadle Park’s TJ Trout got sacked, fumbled the ball and Gonzaga Prep’s Evan Weaver recovered the ball on the second play of the game. It was that kind of night Friday for the Highlanders (1-4) as the Bullpups (5-0) rolled to a lead of 45-0 before Shadle Park got two touchdowns from a freshman quarterback to make the final score 48-14 in nonleague play between Greater Spokane League schools.

George Fox’s game at Whitworth will create Tully reunion

Whitworth is hosting homecoming on Saturday, but the annual event has a deeper meaning as the Pirates welcome a George Fox team that is loaded with coaching ties to the Whitworth program. The Bruins (2-1) restarted football operations in 2014 after a 46-year hiatus and hired head coach Chris Casey, who previously served as defensive coordinator at Whitworth from 1994-04.

NWC comes up big for coach’s birthday

After an even first half, Northwest Christian outscored Colfax 27-0 in the second half for a 41-14 Northeast 2B football win Friday night on the red turf at Eastern Washington’s Roos Field. The Crusaders came up with several huge plays that broke the game open and gave the ultimate birthday gift to coach Jim Nendel, who turned 55.

Spokane lands another major skating event: Team Challenge Cup

U.S. Figure Skating officials confirmed Wednesday that they didn’t just come to town for a Caesar salad at the Greater Spokane Incorporated annual luncheon: Spokane just landed another major skating event. Using a moniker coined in the 2010 U.S. Figure Skating Championships, Sam Auxier said he was thrilled to award the inaugural International Team Challenge Cup to “Skate City, USA.”

Whitworth senior receiver Anthony Fullman told other teammates that he should be back soon after he caught five balls for 105 yards in the 39-20 win over La Verne last Saturday. But Fullman suffered a broken collarbone that will likely end his career with the Pirates.

SYSA makes crucial contact with youths with noncontact rugby

They gathered slowly and some remained tentative, afraid to commit. A few of the gathered youths switched between English and their native language from the Marshall Islands as a coach encouraged them to take part. Within moments, all the youths had flags draped from their waists and they ran for their lives. They laughed and flung the ball to teammates as they tasted their first thrill of rugby on the cold grass at Andrew Rypien Field.

Spokane expected to host skating’s Team Challenge Cup

A high-profile skating delegation coming to Spokane this week is expected to announce the Lilac City again will host a major figure skating event: the first-ever Team Challenge Cup. The U.S. Figure Skating delegation arriving Wednesday will include 1992 Olympic champion Kristi Yamaguchi, 2014 U.S. champion and Olympian Gracie Gold and several skating officials.
