Whitworth football opens at home vs. Whittier on Saturday

When the Whitworth Pirates held their final scrimmage last Friday, the team had almost as many starters on the sidelines as they did banging against each other on the field. But coach Rod Sandberg said most of those players, except starting linebacker Luke Peterson, are expected to play Saturday at 11 a.m. in the Pine Bowl when the Pirates open the season against Whittier.

Northeast 1B North: Republic aiming for title game this season

Republic rumbled through the Northeast 1B North league last year and lost in the state semifinals. But the 2015 version of the Tigers could be more dangerous. Coach Chris Burch must replace twins Alex and Angelo Rivera (Carroll College), but he returns 12 seniors, added two transfers and he likes what he sees on the smoky practice field.

Whitworth offensive line key to building program into perennial power

When Rod Sandberg entered his first spring in 2014 as the head coach of Whitworth, he only had a handful of linemen on the roster who were healthy enough to practice. It’s not exactly the blueprint he envisioned, especially after Sandberg hired Alan Stanfield from Shadle Park to run an up-tempo offense that seeks to run 110 plays a game.

Whitworth will have competition at quarterback

When you tied for the lead in NCAA Division III passing yards per game, replacing the quarterback becomes a challenge. Ian Kolste got his sophomore season restored after he hurt his shoulder in a win last year at Whittier. Prior to that game, he had been named the starter ahead of graduated senior Bryan Peterson, who then went on to set several school passing records and led the nation with 34 completions per game.

Area hunter Troy Pottenger uses trail cameras and wind data to search for trophy whitetails

Wind charts. Thermals. Bedding areas. Travel lanes. Finding the edge of the wind. These are the tools that Troy Pottenger uses every day during the summer to locate what he hopes is that buck of a lifetime. While his goal is to someday find that 200-inch class whitetail buck, he’d be just as happy to take home a mature bruiser who has lived in the Idaho high country for eight or nine years.
