Spokane Capitalizes On Eugene’S Pitching

The Spokane Indians hit the road and snapped a two-game losing streak with a 9-1 win over the Emeralds in Eugene, Ore. Pitcher Heath Murray threw 11 strikeouts for Spokane and gained his first win since July 11 - when he also faced Tim Byrdak and Eugene.

Spokane jumped ahead 4-0 in the first inning. Pete Bifone’s single drove in Erik Martinez to begin the scoring. Darren Grass, who finished the night with five RBIs, followed with a 3-run homer.

Bifone, normally stationed at first base, went 3 for 4 and flawlessly handled six chances in the field while playing third in place of Antonio Fernandez, who was injured by a pitched ball on Monday.

Eugene pitchers issued 12 walks, seven of them in the eighth inning, when Spokane scored twice on a throwing error by catcher Tyler Williamson.

It was the 17th time this season the Emeralds had 10 or more strikeouts in a game.

Today’s game matches Spokane’s Shane Dennis (1-5) against Javier Gambon (0-2) of Eugene. Dennis’ lone win came against Eugene.
