Leona (Plunkett) Hoglan Bonners Ferry, Idaho

Service for Leona A. (Plunkett) Hoglan, 83, is planned for 11 a.m. today at United Methodist Church in Bonners Ferry. Burial will follow at Grandview Cemetery. Bonners Ferry Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements

Mrs. Hoglan, who died Tuesday, was born in Wickes, Mont.

Her husband, Alton Hoglan, preceded her in death. She is survived by one son, Larry Hoglan of Bonners Ferry; one sister, Lucille Ferguson of Clatskanie, Ore., six grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.

Lester Smart Oakesdale, Wash.

Graveside service for Lester G. Smart, 77, is planned for 7:30 p.m. today at Oakesdale City Cemetery. Kramer Funeral Home in Tekoa, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Smart, who died Tuesday, was born in Plum Creek, Mont. He moved to the Oakesdale area in 1935 and worked for farmers in the area. He operated a gas station in Rosalia, Wash., for a few years and began farming in the early 1940s. He retired in 1983.

He was a member of Oakesdale Community Presbyterian Church.

His wife, Jean Smart, died in 1987. He is survived by two sons, Jerry Smart of Oakesdale and Dennis Smart of Denver; two daughters, Candy Lisenbee of Farmington, Wash., and Carolyn Neer of Kent, Wash.; one brother, Ray Smart of Lewistown, Mont.; two sisters, Ina Young of Reno, Nev., and Addie Carter of Lewistown; eight grandchildren and four greatgrandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to Tekoa Care Center, Oakesdale Community Presbyterian Church or American Cancer Society.

Alvin Halverson Spokane

Memorial service for Alvin L. “Al” Halverson, 80, will be held at 11 a.m. today at the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd. Private inurnment will be at Pines Cemetery. Thornhill Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Halverson, a 48-year Spokane resident, died Wednesday. He was born in Allard, Mont.

He moved to Billings, Mont., when he was 13 and graduated from high school there. He and his wife moved to Spokane in 1946. He operated a cattle and hay ranch in Valleyford since 1959. He joined the Spokane County Sheriff’s Department in 1957 and retired in 1977 as a sergeant. Most recently, he co-owned Irv’s Faceting and Supply, a rock and gem shop.

He was one of the founders of the Spokane Valley Summer Baseball League and was a chief umpire. He was a charter member of the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd. He was a member of the Spokane County Retired Deputy Sheriff’s Association, past president of the Rock Roller’s Club and past master of the Neighborhood Grange of Mica.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Martha Halverson, at home; two daughters, Jeanell Malone of Spokane and Anne Mills of Kirkland, Wash.; three sons, Albert Halverson of St. Maries, Neil Halverson of Mica, and Chris Halverson of Spokane; three sisters, Anna Price of Hamilton, Mont., Amy Nielson of Sacramento, Calif., and Edna Reiner of Peoria, Ill., and 11 grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd or Union Gospel Mission.

Edith Weber Greenacres

At her request, no service will be held for Edith F. Weber, 78. Private burial will be at the Pines Cemetery.

Mrs. Weber, who died last Saturday, was a lifetime Greenacres resident.

She graduated from Central Valley High School and volunteered with Expo ‘74. She worked in the weather tower at Felts Field and was involved with the Spokane Women’s Symphony Society.

She was also a homemaker.

Mrs. Weber was a member of Eagles Lodge 2.

Her husband, Al Weber, died in 1973.

She is survived by one daughter, Marcella Oman of Spokane; and two grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association.

Kyle Kegley Wallace

Service for Kyle Lynn (Smith) Kegley, 22, is planned for 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Silverton, Idaho. Shoshone Funeral Home in Wallace, Idaho is in charge.

Mr. Kegley died July 24 in Alaska in a fire on a processing ship. He was born in Salt Lake City.

He graduated from Wallace High School and was attending the University of Utah as a pre-medicine student. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Boy Scouts, and wrestling team.

He is survived by his parents, Bob and Sandy Kegley; one brother, Daryl Kegley; two sisters, Daninelle and Breanan Kegley, all at home.

Hugh Jacobs St. John, Wash.

No service will be held for Hugh L. Jacobs, 85. Burial will be at St. John Cemetery.

Mr. Jacobs, who was born in St. John, died Monday in Apple Valley, Calif.

He was an administrator with Kennewick Public Schools for 15 years. He lived in Washington for 64 years and in Mesa, Ariz., for 20 years.

He is survived by one daughter, Judy Odenbreit of Apple Valley; two sons, Donald Jacobs of British Columbia ad Bruce Jacobs of Portland; two grandchildren, and four greatgrandchildren.

Richard Haag Sr. Spokane

Service for Richard N. “Dick” Haag Sr., 56, will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Hazen and Valley Jaeger Funeral Home. Burial will be at Greenwood Memorial Terrace.

Mr. Haag, an East Valley School District elementary teacher, died Wednesday.

He graduated from Rogers High School and from Eastern Washington State University. He received a masters degree from Whitworth College. He served in the Army from 1961-63 and taught and coached grades 3 through 6 for 20 years.

He was a member of the Eastern Washington and the National Education Associations.

He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Vera Haag, at home; two daughters, Cindy Morris and Debbie Semler; one son, Richard Haag Jr.; his father Elbert Outlaw, all of Spokane; three brothers, Gary and Larry Outlaw, both of Napa, Calif., and Ken Outlaw of Roseburg, Ore.; four grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Cancer Patient Care.

Gary Sparber Spokane

Memorial service for Gary M. Sparber will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Ball and Dodd Funeral HomeNorth. There will be cremation.

Mr. Sparber, who was born in Potlatch, Idaho, died Thursday. He was 58.

He moved to Spokane as a child and graduated from Lewis and Clark High School. He graduated from Whitworth College and, in 1980, from Pepperdine University in California with a masters degree in business administration in 1980. He worked for the AnheuserBusch Co., as an account salesman. He retired last December.

He was a member of the Footprinters.

He is survived by his wife of 18 years, Irene Sparber, at home; two sons, Michael Sparber of Nine Mile Falls and Anthony Sparber of Honolulu; one daughter, Shelley Minyard of Dallas; two stepsons, Ken and David Wanless, both of Spokane; one step-daughter, Sherry Johnson of Modesto, Calif.; his mother Jean Hartman of Spokane; one sister, Erna Whitney of Cheney, and eight grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

George Dey Spokane

George M. Dey, 86, died June 21 in Manley, Neb., while visiting relatives. Cremation took place in Nebraska, and inurnment was in Seattle.

Mr. Dey, a longtime resident of Spokane and Metaline Falls, Wash., was born in Staplehurst, Neb.

He was a World War II Army veteran and worked for the Forest Service.

He was preceded in death by two wives, Ora Dey and Glenda Dey.

He is survived by his sister-in-law, Imogene LeBaron, of Federal Way, Wash.

Opal Drahn Spokane

Memorial service for Opal A. Drahn will be held at 11 a.m today at Riplinger Funeral Home. Cremation will precede with burial of her remains at the City View Cemetery in Pasco.

Mrs. Drahn, 81, died Thursday. She was born in Pomeroy, Wash.

She graduated from Tekoa High School and lived in Spokane for 35 years. She was a homemaker.

She is survived by her husband, Lawrence Drahn, at home; one son, Richard Petersen of Olympia; one stepson, Tom, and one grandson.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Spokane.

William Yake Spokane

Service for William Albert Yake, 78, is planned for 2 p.m. Monday at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Riverside Memorial Park.

Mr. Yake, a lifetime Spokane resident, died Tuesday.

He graduated from Washington State University and served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He was an engineer and worked for the city of Spokane for 30 years.

He was an elder at United Presbyterian Church and First Presbyterian Church. He was a member of Evergreen Toastmasters and had been a Scoutmaster.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Barbara Yake, at home; two sons, William Yake of Olympia and Thomas Yake of Spokane; two daughters, Mary Wolenski of Baton Rouge, La., and Elizabeth Flatbush of Hayward, Calif.; two brothers, Harley Yake of Deer Park and Glen Yake of Spokane; one sister, Judy Yake Hanson of Eugene, Ore., and five grandchildren.

Bessie Steidle Coeur d’Alene

No service will be held for Bessie Marie Steidle, 78, at her request. Yates Funeral Home of Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Steidle, who died Tuesday at Sunset Terrace Extended Care in Coeur d’Alene, was born in Bradleyville, Mo.

She was raised in Spokane and graduated from West Valley High School.

Mrs. Steidle worked at the Federal Land Bank, and then as office manager of Robideaux Motors in 1978. In retirement, she and her husband spent summers in Coeur d’Alene and winters in Arizona.

Her husband, Herbert Steidle, died in 1988.

She is survived by her sister-in-law, Joan Roberts of Spokane.

Alma Lee Deer Park

No service will be held for for Alma “Bobbie” Lois Lee, 82. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of cremation.

Mrs. Lee, who died Tuesday, was a lifetime Deer Park resident. She graduated from Deer Park High School in 1928 and was a member of the first Camp Fire group formed in Deer Park.

She and her husband lived in Oregon before moving back to Eastern Washington in 1951. In 1955, they bought their home in Spring Valley, outside Newport, Wash., where they lived until 1989.

They moved to Eloika Lake Road and then to Deer Park.

She is survived by her husband, Bert Lee, at home; two daughters, Alma Kudlacek of Longview, Wash. and Leslie Schultz of Chehalis, Wash.; two sisters, Clara Larson and Irma Lockridge; 11 grandchildren, 12 greatgrandchildren and two great-greatgrandchildren.

Vi Klages Spokane

Private cremation will be held for Vi W. Klages, 80, who died Tuesday. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Klages, a 66-year Spokane resident, was a former member of the Bishop’s Guild of the Episcopal Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist.

She worked as a secretary for Montgomery Ward for 11 years.

For several years during the 1970s, Mrs. Klages and her husband handled commercial real estate properties through D.H. Klages and Associates.

Her husband, Don Klages, died in 1992.

She is survived by one daughter, Mimi Phillips of Spokane; and two grandchildren.

Eugene Rogers Deer Park

Service for Eugene L. “Gene” Rogers, 66, was held Friday at 1 p.m. at Riverside Chapel, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Cremation preceded.

Mr. Rogers, who died Tuesday from lupus, was born in St. Louis, Mo.

A longtime resident of Spokane and Deer Park, Mr. Rogers worked as a pressman for The Los Angeles Times and for The Spokesman-Review for more than 14 years. He retired in 1990.

He was a member of the Pressmen’s Union and was a World War II veteran.

Mr. Rogers was the captain of a commercial fishing boat in San Pedro, Calif., and was a licensed airplane pilot.

He is survived by his wife of 26 years, Lariene Rogers, at home; two daughters, Calla Smorodin of New Jersey and Josephine Valiulis of Los Angeles; one son, Burgess Wood of New Jersey; his mother, Viola Rogers of St. Louis; one brother, Frank Rogers of Staten Island, N.Y.; one sister, Diane Rogers of St. Louis; six grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Lyle Husk Spokane

Private service will be held for Lyle G. Husk, 66, who died Tuesday. Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

A Spokane resident 49 years, Mr. Husk retired in 1985 from Kaiser Aluminum at Mead after more than 31 years as a mechanized cell operator.

He is survived by three sons, Richard and William Husk, both of Spokane, and Ronnie Husk of Post Falls; one daughter, Diane Husk of Spokane; one brother, Fred Husk of Cataldo, Idaho; two sisters, Phoebe Robbins of Coeur d’Alene and Sharon Forry of Fairfield; 10 grandchildren and four greatgrandchildren.

Urgel Bell Colfax, Wash.

Service for longtime LaCrosse resident Urgel G. Bell, 81, is planned for 11 a.m. Monday at Colfax First Baptist Church. Burial will follow at LaCrosse Cemetery. Bruning Funeral Home in Colfax, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Bell, who died Wednesday, was born in Touchet, Wash. He graduated from Walla Walla High School and farmed in the Riparia-Hooper, Wash., area, beginning in 1932. He retired in 1971.

He was a member of the Colfax Elks Lodge, the LaCrosse Masonic Lodge, El Katif Shrine and Washington State University Cougar Club. He was a former Whitman County Commissioner and was past president of the National Association of State Racing Commissioners. He was a past member of the LaCrosse School Board and past mayor of LaCrosse.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Virginia Bell, at home; four daughters, Linda Brison of Bothell, Wash., Lola Aune and Loretta Daniel, both of LaCrosse, and Lorna Burns of Endicott, Wash; three sisters, Edna Eccles and Rita Eisels, both of Walla Walla, and Zella Miller of Spokane; five brothers, Merwyn and Roy Bell, both of The Dalles, Ore., Ben Bell of Albany, Ga., Verle Bell of Spokane and Ray Bell of Poway, Calif.; 14 grandchildren, and five greatgrandchildren.

Barbara Dotson Spokane

Private service will be held for Barbara R. Dotson, 69. Riplinger Funeral Home is in charge of cremation.

Mrs. Dotson, who was born in Spokane, died Wednesday.

A homemaker, she had lived in Spokane for the past 34 years.

She is survived by her husband, Warren Dotson, at home; one son, Michael Paffumi, two daughters, Sandra Johnson and Tammy Cline, and one brother, Kenneth Leamer, all of Spokane; and six grandchildren.

John Crockett Colville, Wash.

Private service for John Warren Crockett, 72, was at Highland Cemetery in Colville, Wash.

Mr. Crockett died Tuesday.

Born in Bossburg, Wash., he graduated from Marcus High School and worked for Montgomery Ward in Spokane for several years.

He later worked at the Drapper Sawmill in Colville and was a horse trainer at Playfair and Longacres Race Courses. He retired in 1982.

Mr. Crockett is survived by one brother, Charles Crockett of Auburn, Wash.
