Man Killed In Hang Gliding Accident

From Staff

A California man was killed in a hang glider accident in a remote area of the high desert near the junction of the California, Oregon and Nevada borders.

John Carr Bentel, 26, San Francisco, took off with a group of other pilots from the top of Black Cap between 2 and 3 p.m. Thursday but flew beyond radio range of ground crews about 4 p.m., said Lake County Sheriff Charles “Pepper” Withers.

Bentel’s companions located his body before noon Friday on a rocky hillside about two miles west of Adel. Bentel was still in his harness, Withers said.

Deputies were investigating, along with an inspector from the U.S. Hang Gliding Association.
