Magdalen Johnstone Spokane

Family service was held for Magdalen M. Johnstone at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Mrs. Johnstone, 79, died Sunday. She was born in Dickinson, N.D.

She lived in Spokane for 50 years and was a credit manager for Lubins clothing store.

Her husband, Earl Johnstone, preceded her in death. She is survived by one daughter, Donna Talley of Spokane; one sister, Eleanor Marcus of Spokane; one brother, Peter Klug of Roswell, N.M.; three grandchildren and one greatgrandson.

James Spring Sandpoint

Memorial service for James D. Spring, 65, is planned for 11 a.m. today at Hazen and Jaeger Valley Funeral Chapel.

Mr. Spring, a longtime Sandpoint resident, died Wednesday in Spokane, where he was born.

He owned J&R Woodworking in Sandpoint and retired in 1990.

He was a member of the Sandpoint Elks Lodge.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Ilene Spring, at home; three daughters, Rennie Wiedmann, Jan Rae Carter and Kathy Sawyer, all of Spokane; one son Dennis Spring of Sandpoint; one brother, Jack Spring of Spokane; one sister, Marlys Weber of Portland; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Dr. Joseph Long Greenfield, Calif.

Memorial service for Dr. Joseph Long, 67, was held at Hamblen Park Presbyterian Church.

Dr. Long, who was born in Portland, died July 15 in Templeton, Calif.

He graduated from Lewis and Clark High School, Washington State University and received his doctorate at the University of Washington. He served his internship in St. Luke’s Hospital in Spokane and practiced in Moses Lake until 1968 when he moved to Pullman as a physician for WSU. He also taught at the College of Pharmacy. He moved to California several years ago.

His wife, Violet Long, died in 1974. He is survived by his companion, Janice Hennon of Greenfield, Calif.; four daughters, Mary Spangler of Spokane, Joanne Jacobs of Grants Pass, Ore., Peggy Biggs of Cheney and Christine Swift of Eugene, Ore.; four sons, Michael and Daniel Long, both of Spokane, Patrick Long of Yakima and William Long of Bellingham, Wash.; his mother, Elsie Long of Sacramento; two brothers, Robert Long of Seattle and William Long of Sacramento, and numerous grandchildren.

Eva Thomas Spokane

Graveside service for Eva F. Thomas, 90, is planned for 1 p.m. Monday at Spokane Memorial Gardens. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-South is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Thomas, a longtime Spokane resident, died Wednesday. She was born in Ordway, Colo.

She moved to Ritzville with her family in 1904 and to Rockford in 1905. She graduated from high school in Spokane and attended Northwest Business College. She returned to Rockford and worked for the Rockford Grain Growers. She later transferred to the Pullman Grain Growers as a bookkeeper.

Mrs. Thomas and her husband, Norris Thomas, later moved to Spokane. He died in 1970.

She was a member of the Manito United Methodist Church.

There are no surviving family members.

Fern Shimmels Spokane

Service for Fern E. Shimmels, 81, is planned for 1 p.m. Tuesday at Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home. Inurnment will be at Palouse (Wash.) Cemetery at a later date.

Mrs. Shimmels, who died Wednesday, was born in Fenton, Ill.

She lived in Sandpoint and Palouse, Wash., before she moved to Spokane in 1947. She was a homemaker and had worked at Snow White Bakery in Dishman.

She was a former member of Redeemer Lutheran Church and the Coast Guard Auxiliary, and a member of American Association of Retired Persons.

She is survived by one son, Louis Ray of Spokane; three daughters, Margaret Millar of Spokane, Rose Carper of LaGrande, Ore., and Veronica Tierney of Tacoma; one brother, Fred James of Alaska; 21 grandchildren, 36 greatgrandchildren and six great-greatgrandchildren.

Marjorie Waldref Springdale, Wash.

Graveside service for Marjorie L. Waldref, 80, is planned for 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Riverside Memorial Park. Ball and Dodd Funeral Home-North is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Waldref, who died Wednesday, was born in Mason City, Iowa.

She lived in Springdale for 12 years. She was a member of the Ford Homemakers, the Ford Senior Citizens Club, and attended Springdale Community Church.

Her husband, James Waldref, died in 1992. She is survived by one daughter, Martha Jane Russell of Springdale; one sister, Janette Fowler of Milwaukie, Ore.; and four grandchildren.
