Students, Faculty Remember Stevens

This spring, about 300 former students and teachers gathered to share memories of Stevens School before the old building was torn down. Here are a few of their remembrances:

I started first grade in 1934; my teacher was Miss Penke who in the eyes of a 6-year-old boy was the prettiest and sweetest of ladies that one could hope for in starting school. - Jerry Peters

It is so good to walk the halls one more time and remember this special school that was named after the first Washington territorial governor, Isaac Stevens. Thank you for the wonderful memories, all the teachers and classmates. I was privileged. - Larry Whitesitt, 1944-‘52

I spent my first day of teaching first grade in the old home ec room. Little tables and chairs were squeezed in between the stoves and sinks. Later in the year our class moved to the new primary addition. Francis Clizer was the other first-grade teacher, and she was much help to a young person just starting out. - Margery Aubrey, teacher, 1948-‘49

Many fond memories remain with this old building. It is amazing how many names and faces of students remain with me after nearly 30 years, but it was really those students that made so many of the wonderful memories. The noise all the feet made on the maple floors and the sound of birds in the trees out front when students were busy still remain with me. I’m sorry to see the old building go, but I guess nothing stands in the way of progress. - Ted Shepard, student teacher, 1956; teacher, 1957-‘65

I remember well my wonderful grade school years here at Stevens. I especially enjoy the good memories of my fine teachers and kind principal, Mr. Johnson. - M. Charlene Havercroft, 1961-‘69

My favorite teacher was Mrs. Hyde. She was a very special teacher. I dedicate this day to her memory. … Goodbye Stevens School, I will miss you. - Mark Trudeau, 1973-‘77

My memories of Stevens was getting a whoppin’ from Mr. Sesso and I had to say please and thank you. Being patrol person of the month, cleaning the erasers, playing all the sports ever offered to everyone. Mr. Shea being the best sixth-grade teacher! It’s going to be extremely sad to see you go, Stevens, I’ll miss you!! - Keri Kapelke, 1987
