If You Go

By Air

Air access is through Duluth, Minn. A rental car or arrangements for transportation with an outfitter are recommended from there.

By Car

There are 87 entry points to the Boundary Waters, with major ones located near Ely, Grand Marais, Crane Lake, Tofte and Tower.

Reservations and information are available from Superior National Forest, P.O. Box 338, Duluth, MN 55801; (218) 720-5324.

Parties are limited to six people, two adults per canoe. A $5 permit is needed to reserve entry to the Boundary Waters from May 1 through Sept. 30.

Once there

Motel or lodge accommodations, restaurants, and guiding and outfitting services are available in border towns. Outfitting runs $50 and up daily, per person, $30 for children, including canoes, paddles, life vests, food, tents, sleeping bags, pots, pans, first-aid kits and virtually everything else you might need, except for personal gear, clothing and a fishing license for out-of-state residents (available for 1-, 3-, or 7-day periods, or annually, for $7.50 to $27.50).

Rates for guided trips run around double those of outfitting only; they are highly recommended, especially for first-time visitors.

Beware

It is easy to become lost. Signs are few. Water levels change, altering map reference points. Compass reading skills are necessary.
